What would be the best rule to follow when dodging storms in the bay?
what should one look for or anticipate?

the best practice would be to stay off the water!!! that I am aware!!! but it just gets difficult to keep from heading out and chunking some bait!

I have a basic rule. Make your first spot the farthest one away and work your way back as conditions get sketchy. Stay closer when its doubtful. Always have a plan of where to run for protection - a cabin, spoil, or in the case of lightning, lay down on shore and wait it out.

Take either a tablet computer or a cell phone which can bring up the Doppler radar. It should have a function where you can scroll the radar and see which direction the storm cells are headed. I use Accuweather on my home computer and WeatherBug on my phone. Both have good Doppler radar.

I don't go out in the bay.

Seriously, if the weather is changing fast I stick close to the ramp and spoil islands. The waves in the bay can remind you of a bad movie involving a fishing boat at a minute's notice.

I've seen it go form a light chop to waves higher than the console faster than I could bring in the anchor.

Let's hear it for self -bailing boats. Wink

In addition to what the others said, trust your instincts! It may seem like common sense, but if you see a big black cloud coming your way, don't stay to find out how much rain and/or lightning is going to hit!!! I know many don't do this, and they end up back at the dock dripping wet or worse! Shocked Shocked

The myradar app on the iphone is the best radar I have used. But yes, to your farthest spot 1st, then work back. Hell, I do that even on sunny days. Very Happy

Don't just hunker down and look at your tracks on the GPS. Rain is going to hamper your vision and dull your sense of sound. Watch for faster boats passing by.

I stay off of the bays and off the gulf after I had a night trip out of Galveston with friends. We were fishing approximately six ,miles out almost to the of the North jetties and its was blew in on us from several directions. The water went from flat to 5' waves and raining very hard and lightning flashing all a round us.Our hair was standing up on our arms. You could feel it. The lightning popping noise was very loud and close around us.
Anyway I don't want to go through another night or day like that. A limit of Trout is not worth it.

Great topic. I don't mind the isolated thunder storm, but I do stay within a quick paddle from the truck when kayak fishing in the bay. I fished last Tuesday, rain suit in hatch and quickly caught a nice limit of reds.

The beach is much more scary. It floods quick.

Lightning is no joke. I read once of a fisherman who's line never came down after a cast during a thunderstorm. Just bowed in an arch, and stayed in the air. Lightning hit seconds later....

I love fishing in the rain... Always have

Mullet have a hard time seeing you coming with the cast net when it's raining

That very thing happened to me and my buddy down around pure oil earlier this year. Rods started buzzing, line would not go down, lightning and thunder in the distance. Then he caught this:

Was dead calm, then all hell broke loose. Boxed a couple fish, and headed back to the marina. The most freaky thing I have ever experienced on the water.
