Last week or so I went into the hospital for heart rehab which last just an hour and came out to find someone stole by old Igloo cooler, and it must have been ten years or older.

Here is how i have mine secured.

I work in a machine shop so i made a hasp that fills in the whole slot which is .5 x 1.375. I had no faith in that little hasp they sell for these coolers.

You need to use titanium cable, bolt cutters will not cut through them. If you use steel use a thicker zirconium. The steel has to harder than the bolt cutter jaws. There are alot of locks out there that will snap a bolt cutter jaws. There are also alot of manufactured cables that are bolt cutter proof. However they are only as good as the devise that holds them such as a hasp. What good is a high dollar lock if the hasp is cheap steel. On the flipside of that most crooks are idiots and in a hurry and don't think about cutting through the hasp. Also most small bolt cutters open only so wide. Just food for thought. Also add Boron locks to that.

IMS, where is the best place to get titanium cable? Also, do you know where to get boron locks and the best brand?

Anywhere they have a good selection of locks and cables. Now remember anything can be cut or sawed/ grinded in half. Chances are thieves won't have a 4 foot set of bolt cutters or the option of setting them on the ground to get leverage for the ultimate snap. Very Happy The bigger and thicker the better. Brass locks and small locks are for looks they are just to keep a honest person honest.

Thanks for the advice! I sent rickg a pm for a couple of those bad to the bone hasps too!

I fill mine with water in the garage just in case someone goes for it while I'm in the house. I figure locking the lids shut and locking them together while full of water would make it a bit of a pain in the butt to steal. At least deny them the quick snatch and grab anyway. Of course they could end up hurting their back not expecting the weight. Then I get sued and my wife not only doesn't get her bitchin new minivan next year, but the house fund is forever gone too. Next thing you know she's married to the yard guy and I'm living with the coyotes on PINS with no clothes surviving off the scraps of Towboat's bean cans and forgetting how to speak english. I'd have my own real life Cable One commercial going on. "Don't live off the scraps of Towboat's bean cans." Maybe this YETI fad is a bad thing Confused

Great reply..... Very Happy remember the hasp are way softer than the locks. They need to be thick.

The pic posted by Rick now that's what I'm talking about. That's a real hasp. No one is going to cut through that. The other hasp snip snip with a set of bolt cutters. If you could heat treat the steel to an RC 60 that would be the wtg. Maybe I should start fabing hasps for Yeti coolers out of 1/2 inch stainless. Idea

17-4 in H.T. condition H900 would be pretty tough and rust resistant.

Hey IMS would a 3/4" craftsman open end wrench bent at a 90 be strong enough to beat most bolt cutters?

I've seen them used before and was wondering how difficult they would be to cut?

Thanks Jason Slocum
