I am need of a new truck and when you do the analysis, a 4wd is +- $4000 more than 2WD for same truck.

I also have a 14000 lb PullPal and winch.

Was wondering, from the expierenced PINS drivers, if you would get the 4WD or just get the 2WD and if get stuck, use the winch and PullPal.

Also, 4wd gets worst gas mileage and insurance is more. I am 60 so I will not be acting like Rat Patrol in the sand.

Just yesterday SBH if I didn't have 4wd I would have gotten stuck in several places. To me, 4wd is the way to go.

All of your assesments are accurate but IMO it is well worth the piece of mind to have a 4X4. I used to worry the whole way down to my deer lease if the roads were going to be bad and end up stuck. Then I got a 4X4 and i will never not own one.

I have put better than 7000 4x4 miles on my truck driving up and down PINS over the past ten years. There is no way...let me repeat...no way...I would be typing this reply without it. While there are certainly times 4x4 is unnecessary, it only takes ONE really bad experience to absolutely convince you that if you have the option, TAKE IT. 4x4, all the way. Very Happy

4x4 without a doubt! As far as a winch goes, exactly what would you winch off from?

I vote 4x4 with the pullpal and winch. Plus throw in some boards and an exhaust jack for good measure.

I have done it both ways, and I say 4x4.

Even not being on rat patrol, you will wish you had the 4x4.

One of the main reasons as has been mentioned a time or two: you will want to go further down the beach and will have to go around someone in the soft stuff. You will spend 15 minutes to an hour every time in a 2wd with winch just getting around people.

For what it is worth.

In my earlier life, I run the island hard and steady for thirteen years. I have had two VW Baja bugs and three 4X4 trucks and had a blast with all. If you plan on running the island with a truck, a 4X4 shall be a must. All other plans are associated ith getting stuck. You can put that in ink !........cC

I have a 2012 Ford F150 4x4 Super Crew, with the 5.0. It gets 17+ in the city, and I can get over 20 mpgs at 70. At 80, I get 17+ again, wind resistance. That's 1 mpg less than a 2wd.

And this new Ford makes easy work of the deep sand. Just be sure to turn off titer traction control first, so there is no throttle reduction. The electronic two wheel antislip software that uses the ABS system works extremely well, making both the front and rear axles work like limited slip differentials when in 4x4. After a few trips, I can't imagine ever needing to use 4lo, it works so well. I can't even imagine needing a locking differential anymore.

I work at an insurance carrier, and can tell you the insurance cost is negligible, as I compared, between 4x4, & non 4x4, and that's because of the increased value of the truck. I can tell you my Ford costs $60 less a month than a comparable Nissan or Dodge, because of the better safety record.

In my last truck, a Dodge, having 4x4 made the difference between being stuck down PINS when a afternoon storm moved in unexpectedly, and being able to drive through the surf that pushed into the high road, with my wife and young daughter.

4x4 isn't a luxury when your down PINS, it's a necessity.

Been on pins at times where I was worried about getting out with with 4x4.
Also times in 2 wheel with no worries, but those times were rare. Just get the 4x4 life's to short for regrets.
