I had to make a quick trip to Corpus to solve some business issues so I decided to throw my gear in the truck and try to hit the surf for a few hours when I got finished. The wind was blowing really hard but I figured what the heck I'm here so I headed out. The waves were pounding me pretty good but I was loving every minute of the solitude and I was also catching a fish here and there so it was worth it.
I had been there about 30 minutes when a family with 4 kids all between 8 and 13 pulled up right next to the truck and bailed out into the water and started playing aroound not 30' from where I was fishing. Needless to say I was somewhat annoyed but hey. I was fishing. A few minutes after they get there I have a good strike and set the hook and I can instantly tell I have something bigger than the whiting AI have been catching. I am doing my best to keep the fish from swimming into the middle of my new companions and cutting me off but it was on a beeline for them. I yelled out to warn them and the rather large mom just gave me a nasty look and ignored me. About that time a fin from a 2 1/2' blacktip surface not 5 feet away from her and she flipped out. Falling all over hwer self and screamming, kids running everywhere, and I'd be lying if I said it was not hilarious.
So I finish fighting the small shark still kinda chuckling to myself when I hear a young girl's voice behind me asking if she could touch the shark. I was really caught off guard by this seeing as she was at most 13 and her parents and brothers were still up on shore scared to death. So I got a death grip on the shark and she was amazed by the rough hide on the shark and was full of questions. So I gladly answered them and released the shark and she never flintched a bit. She keeps talking and I rebait and cast back out. Instantly I get a good bite and set the hook and she screams out " you got one" I handed her the rod and said no you have one. She was not sure how to work the baitcaster so I gave her some instructions and she caught right on. It ended up being a very large bull whiting that put up quite a fuss in the rough surf and she loved every minute of it. After I put it on the stringer she told me that that was the very first fish she had ever caught and thanked me over and over again.
Guys, I have two sons and have never had the privledge many of you have of taking a young girl fishing. Both of my sons are very accomplished fishermen in their own right and I almost forgot that feeling you get when you are lucky enough to introduce the sport to a kid. That sparkle in that young girls eyes upon having a new exciting experience is something I will never forget and it sure put a smile on my face as I was driving back to the hotel.
It's interesting that something that starts out as an annoyance ended up as a memory that I will always cherish and I hope she does as well. |

That's an excellent story. Thank you for being so thoughtful and generous. Not many people would have done what you did. That young lady is going to have that excellent memory for rest of her life. Priceless!

| You are a really good man to take the time to show the young girl how to fish and to let her touch a shark and answer her questions. Sounds like she would never had had an opportunity to learn from her non-fishing parents. You could have just been mad at the family for coming too close to your fishing and stormed off. Instead, you acted like a true gentleman and created a new fisherwwoman. My hats off to you, sir. |

Sometimes life brings us together for a reason.
Her - she had never caught a fish, much less touched a shark.
You - Sons are great, but teaching a daughter or other young lady to fish is just a different feeling.
Fish on! _________________
