Today charter was a little different than most charters. We had picked up a trip from another captain who was already booked for the day. We were very fortunate that Mary Ann had booked us a trip out of her marina between Port A. and Aransas Pass. While I was talking to the charter, I asked if they had been offshore before. One of the daughters mentioned that her dad was the only one that had been offshore fishing. Later in the day, I asked her dad about the trip. Her said he had six children and his first trip he had taken the three oldest. This trip, he had his three younger children on board. They were from San Antonio and his trip from a few years back, had been with Captain Mike Nugent aboard the "Wrecklamation." Captain Mike apparently already had a charted booked for the day they wanted to go, so we were the lucky ones who got to take his group! Just a few pictures from our trip over toward Aransas Pass to pick up our charter and the ride headed out the Port Aransas Jetty's. |

The seas were 3-5' or 4-6', depending upon where you are, at the time. Kingfish fishing has been very good lately on the shrimp boats anchored in 80-85 ft. of water. Not every boat has fish on them, but the ones that do can be loaded. The sizes have been all over the place with some being small bullets around 5 lbs. to a few smokers in the mid 30 range. A few ling have started showing up on the shrimp boats also. The only one we saw today was undersized, but Captain Mark on the "BB11" had two keepers yesterday, both a little under 30 lbs. The kingfish fishing has seemed to slow down, on the anchored ships. We have only caught a couple kings each day while breaking up the run each morning, headed out the the shrimping fleet. We did catch a blacktip shark both today and Saturday on the ships. The one Saturday tipped the scales at 50lbs and was caught on a mono leader drifting a couple hundred yards behind the ship, hoping for a ling, late in the day! [/img] |

I almost forget about Janet and Rebecca's "Big Catch."(I hope I got their name's right since I forgot to write them down. If I am wrong, I apologize) I saw these two happy fisher ladies when we got back in "Turtle Cove." They were having the time of their life. They had set up an umbrella for shade and had a picnic spread enjoying the day. They were kind enough to let me take their picture and shared a cold drink and snack. Thanks!! After getting things cleaned for the day I headed down to the beach to get a look at the surf. The winds seemed to have calmed down in the afternoon and somehow the surf was clear green in the first two guts, even with all this wind. The End! |

Nice report, so how do folks find you for a charter? Do you go by Captain Gulftrout or are you listed under another name? _________________ I LIKE MINE FRIED. |

The "Captain Ling" comes from my time as a captain, running offshore fishing trips from 1983-2004. I no longer have a Captain License. I decided not to waste the money renewing it, since I have "NO" desire to take paying charters fishing ever again. I do enjoy working the deck, "FISHING" and taking friends, both old and new bay fishing when I get the chance.

I have tried them a couple times and honestly I could not tell the difference between hardheads and freshwater channel cats. They have to be big like these pictured to have enough meat to make it worthwhile. The trick is cleaning them properly and for me, while cutting the filet off the skin, cut leaving the dark red on the skin. I would never keep them if there are other fish to eat, for sure. Another "BIG" problem is that they are very dangerous to handle, as anyone knows who has been finned by one, but these ladies handled these guys like a pro!

I just got back from a two day journey and I found myself at one point during this trip at these concrete steps. Is this a "Stairway To Heaven" on "Highway To Hell!" Later |

I have not seen steps like this since I was at the Dennison dam below Lake Texoma.
These appear to be the same kind. Where are they? _________________
