Have ever seen Government and "smart move" used in the same sentence? Well maybe once, when they hired me. But then they keep me stuffed away and don't allow me to be involved in anything that requires thinking. Like looking at a piece of expensive equipment before buying it to make sure it will really work for our needs.

What is very sad is to be there and see the line people and their leads work their asses off doing the best job they can while they and their leads jump through hoops you can not possibly imagine - just to f do their jobs. It was much harder for me (obviously impossible) - because I had spent most of my career working in all kinds of mid to large businesses through out the country. Those that have spent their lives working for the government - to me are amazing that they are able to put with that crap.

Insanity in government ain't nothing new. In 1973/74, I needed a peanut light bulb for a Navy Helo to meet it's night mission capability. This meant I could order it P1. Well the bulb was very small and we needed them on a regular basis. So Super intelligent me decided I would order 100 of them. Supply said you can't do that P1. I ask What can I order P1. They said 1. SO I order one. Next day a FedEx package arrive that would hold a 12 pack of beer. Inside was one small light bulb. It probably took me ten minutes to find the bulb in the packing material. The other 99 bulbs arrived about a month later.

It is all about the expense being in the correct category so the alarm bell doesn't ring on some clueless auditor.

Should have heard them scream when I kept ordering next higher assembly to try and get an almost non-existent part. Turns out I had used the number for an entire Helo. Smile

Cost is not the primary consideration in a bureaucrat's mind. Makes perfect sense to them to be able to say they complied with the furlough order even if they pay much more than saved by paying overtime to meet schedule.
