PostPosted: Tue Jul 09, 2013 1:17 am    Post subject: Prop Lug Removing Question Reply with quote

I am having a hard time removing the Lug on the prop.
I have seen several videos on YouTube but they are not like this one.
When I block the propeller with a 2X4 and try to turn it, the whole shaft turns with the Lug.
Any advice?

Since it's just an 8 hp and it's a aluminum prop you should just buy a new prop. They propbably don't cost that much. Or you could check with the guys at Blue Streak Fabrication, or another listed prop shop I think Coastal Marine.

I am not sure what a here pin is.
It has 3 blades and held in place by a cotter pin.

try this first.......

make a mark on the back of the prop hub and a mark on the prop in the same place. Go run the boat and if the marks move, you have a spun prop.

If not than the prop may be cavitating.

Should have been shear pin. It is a pin under the prop through the shaft. Older small outboards have them.

Apologies for the confusion. Between my spelling and auto correct no telling comes out sometimes.

Try putting the outboard in gear. Take the cowling off and try spinning the prob with your hand (it can be a little tough) if the entire engine turns like its trying to crank then your hub is good. If the prop feels like its slipping and nothing up top is turning then you know for sure its a spun hub. Hope this helps. As far as removing the prop it looks like you need to get that cotter pin out then unscrew the bolt.

Dude you Rock! It came right off in 10 seconds lol.
Based on the pic of the inside of the prop is it safe to say the hub is completely gone?

Don't assume you have a "spun hub." I think that motor uses a shear pin, and you can see it in the first picture. It's the short piece of brass rod that goes through the shaft and sticks out a bit on each side. If that shear pin is removed the prop should just slide right off. It could be that the pin fell out when you turned the prop, thus letting the prop slide off. If you put it all back together without the shear pin, the prop will just spin freely on the shaft.

Also, it's possible the pin sheared at some point and in the process distorted the sheared ends of the pin so they didn't just fall out before. Is the shear pin, either whole or in two or three pieces, laying on the ground or garage floor where you removed the prop?

No problem! Yep looks like its spun the rubber looks a little mangled. I would try what IMS said, look for a whole new prop, I doubt its that much more. Be sure and clean the shaft then rub grease on it before putting a new prop/hub on. Hope this gets you on the water!

I have all the pieces but should the shaft turn so easily both in neutral and in gear?
