I heard from a close friend that he encountered an alligator while wade fishing Baffin Bay. I say he's full of crap. I've seen them in the back waters of the bays in the valley, but up here in pure saltwater. What do you think? _________________ "Nothing makes a fish bigger than almost being caught." |

| I've never seen one out there, but I don't see why not. I never thought I'd see dolphins way back at Site 55 either. |

people often mistake large gar for alligators in the saltwater. and yes, alligator gar can live in salt water _________________ "Ya'll must eat a lot of fish" |

truthfully i dont know never did a salinty test in either one nor drank from either one, ive just fished and commercial shrimped in both caught the same stuff, no reason an alligator couldnt live in either one, but then again i'm not an alligator expert either. however i can now back up snookereds stuff with some numbers after some quick research, cause i'm one one those that have to have the writting on the wall...so here it is,the average salinity in baffin 40 ppt wow, the average salinity of aransas is 15 ppt whoa how bout that. and i would guess ppt stands for parts per thousand. i guess thats why back in the early 1900s they use to collect salt from the lagoon. _________________ I LIKE MINE FRIED. |

| Waded at Egg Point in St. Charles Bay two weekends ago. Had a gator (~8ft) parallel my wade but he stayed about 200yds away. I've had smaller ones follow my topwater bait to within 100-ft or so. |

| I wade fished out by Aransas NWR last Summer and had about a 8' gator swimming around. They don't bother me too much unless it is longer than 10' then I will go somewhere else. There are alot of them around that area. They have really increased in numbers the last decade. New seasons are being opened up in new areas of the state. There really are too many in some areas. We usually get around three permits a year for our hunting club. |

I saw one in March or April right beside the ICW next to Ransom between Aransas Pass and Ingleside. I have seen them in the open water of Espirto Santo Bay in between Seadrift and POC. And tons of them in the open waters of St Charles Bay. I have seen lots of them in the swamps and marshes. I don't think the saltwater has anything to do with it. They seem to do just fine in either salt or fresh waters.
There is no reason a gator couldn't be hanging in Baffin. Heck there are tons of them just inland at Choke Canyon and Lake Mathis. And if I remember correctly from my oilfield days, there were rumors of big gators living on the King Ranch. |
