I asked the other day about the Gulp baits everyone is talking about, and I then took the advice and went into action. Some requested a report. I am not that good at reporting other than the facts, I do not have a digital camera, and if I did, I would not even begin to know how to take pictures from camera and put in computer.

I purchased the white, molten, penny, and rootbeer.

I then went fishing tonight under the lights. I started with the rootbeer as that is what I was told was working. Side note, the penny colored are just about sold out at Academy.

In less than ten casts, I had five red fish with two getting away for another day. Several were caught on the white, and a little more than several caught on the penny, but rootbeer was 1st place.

At this point, I am sold, BUT when things slowed down a little, live shrimp was the winner. I am not ready to concede to live shrimp as it may have been the user of the Gulps lacking necessary skills.

Reds were from 23 to almost 28. Is it not interesting that we may squeeze to get a little extra for a keeper, and on the other hand hope and not squeeze to keep a keeper. I usually make sure I am well over or well under depending on fish.

Interesting note: Gulp bait and live shrimp thrown within six inches of each other, guess which one caught the red - GULP.

By the way, are these baits only good for a few minutes or do they retain their smell after prolonged use?

Thank you to all who have helped and are helping me here.

I still want to learn the topwaters, but work allows for only night fishing right now, and I want to learn in the day when I can see what I am doing - or do I?

The scent and taste are Mainly for taste. the lure works great so that gets the fish to eat, once she grabs it she gets that taste and she ain't lettin go! Trout are sight feeders, and redfish are mainly too but are opportunistic feeders also. So they mainly feed from the action and then don't let go once they taste it.
Good luck

I like the gulps better when they are a bit chewed up. You can always dip back in if you want for more scent but I think the scent last.

Dont be afraid to throw that toppie in the dark. Try one big and obnoxious. Warning-this can be very addictive not for the faint of heart or those with pre-existing medical conditions.

Have you seen the brown tide in the laguna during the summer. Smell plays a much bigger role than youre giving credit for.

good job Gib, that's the way to do it.....experiment, figure what works best, and then go from there....

sounds like you had a very successful experiment too, with the reds!!

look forward to your next "field-test"......

(and lovetofish is right, don't pick up a topwater unless you're prepared to figure out how deep the rabbit hole really goes Smile

I went out Sat. morning with my Dad, he was throwing good penny slurps and I was throwing regular assassins, new penny and plum chartruse, he was outfishing me until I tied on some new penny gulps, they worked about the same, The fresher ones seemed to bring on the hotter action.
