|
|
Hey guys....
After taking my new 4x4 out to PINS last Saturday to test her out....the sand was soft and she was spinning her tires a few times but did well.
My question is....I know I should have let some air out of the tires but I needed to more about it first. How much air should I let out? Or how many lbs should I leave in her? She has 16"...Goodyear TRD tires.
Thanks,,

| I don't air down unless I absolutely need to...if the sand is really soft for very long sections of the beach I air down to 20 and that usually works for my truck |

| "Animal" is right on the money. Generally speaking you don't need to air down unless your breaking new territory. It subjects your tires to more punctures. |

| I agree as well. Keep the air in until you really have to let it out. But, if you let it out and have tires without beadlocks don't go below 10 pounds or so. |

Sometimes you just need to put it in 4 lo and take ut slow also. I have never had to air down. Choose your path carefully and look far enough ahead so that you can mAke changes or plan an escape route _________________ Chris Gonzales |

Thanks for the comments, guys. I really appreciate it.
So the plan is not to let out the air unless it is really necessary...and also carry a shovel and pail.....
I will be heading down PINS this Saturday or Sunday...more then likely Saturday....

good idea to add a farm/highlift jack to your arsenal too. _________________ Eagles may soar...but weasels don't get sucked into jet engines. |

I've never aired down, though I might consider it if I was breaking new trail. I do carry a compressor, jack, shovels and snatch straps. |

And I have heard about Yarborough pass...where you can actually drive thru the dunes to get to the bay and either fish and/or get some good bait.
What MM is that at? And is that true?
And is there a map out there that will show these kinds of roads? _________________ (( Living the life I was born to live.....

I have logged too many miles to count on PINS, and needed 4lo once in the 20 plus years I have been driving myself and family there. I have never aired down.
Driving in the sand is about two things, flotation and momentum.
You need wide tires that don't dig too much. Aggressive offroad tires, like mud tires or rock crawlers dig versus rolling on top of the sand. You want an AT at most, and street tires are fine. Airplane tires work best. The point is floating over the sand is the idea.
The second piece is momentum. Always look ahead so you have a clear path and don't stop in the soft stuff. At the same time, you don't want to give it too much gas either, causing your tires to spin and loose traction. This will cause you to get really stuck. Just keep your momentum, and ease into the gas when you start to slow down.
The last thing is to know the limits of your vehicle. Don't try to go through sand that is obviously super soft and deep. Stay in the rutts. Don't drive where you don't see tracks.
I have never been stuck, knock on wood, but I have pulled many out over the years.
Be very careful if you are going to the Y, and the pass through the dunes is one of the hardest to make it through. It gets really deep and soft, and sometimes even the best if drivers can get stuck. . I have seen Jeep Wranglers on 35s stuck there. Then once through, the road behind it can be equally dangerous after good rains. Deep mud. So know what the weather is expecting to do.
Tight lines! |
