This is more a question than a report but me and the gang hit the sand early Monday morning to find fresh weed rolling in until about the 30 where we set up shop , caught pup sharks ,hard heads and one jack until the weed made it to the beach there too. So I decide to fish from the yak to try to avoid the weed and pull up two black tips in the 3 ft range then nothing so headed back to land to find the weed washed up on the beach and the water pretty much clear of it. So I put out a decent size mullet in the first gut on my MXLmc and it sits and sits and sits , we start loading up my truck to head back and everything is loaded except that rod I was just thinking about reeling it in when it takes off , for the first two minutes Im just watching my line ripping as whatever is on the end of my line goes from the first gut to the second then past the third bar and I don't where it finally stopped but i finally started to gain some line back . I barely get a few cranks in when I feel that "pop" followed by a slack line . Damn. So here's where my question comes in. I had about 50-60 yards of 30 lb top shot on the end my line and when I reeled up my line I had about 10 yards left so the shark ( I'm assuming ) didn't bite thru my leader , and the break was to far to be from a tail whip , so was it a sand bar that got me?? A perfect sharp shell? What do y'all think cause I'd like to try to avoid this from happening again! Thanks in advance.

Get a heavier top shot. You have to change it often the bars eat mono that sits for long periods of time _________________ Great captains, the stuff of legend, are made not by what they have caught, but by what they have given back. |

x2
there are alot of factors that can play in a line breaking when on the beach.
it could of been the sandbar.
it could of been a bad batch of line
it could of had a nick in the line
or even a weak spot
it even could of been another fish seeing the reflection of the line and biting it
sometimes by inspecting the point of the break you can get an idea of what it may of been ex. clean cut, jagged or frayed look to it. or if it looks like it was rubbed with sand paper. just my .02 cents tho. _________________ Chris Gonzales |

| Depends on how you had the drag setup you may have just broke your topshot due to drag. I've measured my mxl at 22lbs or so. I run 50 lb suffix tritanium which has the diameter of 40lb so that's nice. On that setup I have landed a 6' blacktip that was foul hooked on the pectoral fin. I am also running 65lb power pro backing at about 400 or so yards. |

Thanks for the info guys !
The line was pretty new so I know it couldn't have been to frayed up and I know my drag wasn't to tight because I fish with with it pretty low to avoid this from happening . And it was a pretty clean cut on the line if I remember right _________________
