|
|
My dad and I are going to be down next Friday for a week, we decided to fish the Third Coast Fishing Tournament out of the Bluffs landing Marina on the 25th but all we are going to have is that Friday afternoon to try and find some fish. We have a 19' bay/flats boat that we will be fishing from.
If anyone could help point us at some spots where trout and reds might be we would be most appreciated!!! Our condo is on packery channel but I am up for fishing anywhere from Baffin to Oso bay to the Corpus bay side of Mustang Island. |

I would try the backside of mustang island. It's close to where you will be staying and there is a boat ramp under the JFK. I think I heard that the water further south is not as clear. I don't fish from a boat very often so I dunno how much I would I would consider this opinion. I would use live shrimp targeting sand pockets. Maybe start off early with some top water action? You can't beat just getting out there! Post up a report and be careful traveling! _________________ Great captains, the stuff of legend, are made not by what they have caught, but by what they have given back. |

| That is a fun tournament but very competetive. There will be lots of reds entered by the end of the day. Even though the flounder division pays 1k compared to 5k for the reds, i'd suggest bumping a lure along the bottom in hopes of landing a big flatty rather than competing against all those reds. Not near as many flounder are brought in. Just my .02 |

Yeah me and dad are by no means competitive fisherman, this will honestly be our first ever tournament and our first time fishing the corpus area together in probably 13 years.
As a kid we fished down there almost once a month but then we moved when I was 12 and haven't had many opportunities to fish there since and now he lives is Arizona and I in Kansas so we have even fewer opportunities to just fish together. I just thought this might be a fun experience for the two of us and hopefully we can catch a couple fish in the process!
So any help that you guys are willing to share would be great! |

We turned in a Red just a little short of 27" last years and did not get even close to the top 10. So going after flounder might be a good idea. _________________

The problem with flounder is I have ZERO experience fishing for them, and from what I have read they can be difficulty to catch... I honestly look at the prize money kind of like the lotto, I doubt we are going to win the thing but I am gonna put my dollar in the hat just the same...
Now with that being said if you have tips and spots for flounder I am all ears! |

Go to academy and buy a flounder rig. Its a mono leader with a barrel weight on the top. Use a 3/0 circle hook. Buy some live (even dead works) finger mullet. Cast about 5-10 feet along the drop off of a channel or ICW where water has good movement. Drag the mullet along the bottom until you feel a thump. Wait a few seconds for the fish to get the fish in its mouth and set hook.
Others may have different tactics, especially if using lures. But this works for me. I have found most flounder in cuts near where the water from the flats drain on outgoing tide.
We have had good luck with reds in the flats by using 3 inch sized chunks of cut mullet. Cast in the sand pockets and wait. Don't touch the rod after you cast, just wait. |

| What Jimsa said. I fish for them just like largemouth bass. I put a jigheaded lure (1/8 oz), cast near a dropoff near a channel, let it sink to bottom, and slowly very slowly drag and drop. Might want to go weedless. They normally are in shallow water. When they bite you have to give them time to take rhe lure. 3-10 seconds normally. Set the hook and good luck. |
