Well, it's been a busy few months, one of those life gets in the way type of deals, but with things slowing down, it was time to get down to fishing. My last trip was in November, except for an over-nighter I stayed on the beach after the Beach Cleanup, where I managed one Pomp (beats getting skunked!). My wife noticed I was getting the shakes pretty bad so we had a free weekend she suggested we take a Tuesday off and make a long weekend of it. Gotta love her. We requested the time and then we started watching the weather. Stupid fronts. A week out I made the call that we would go come hell or high water since some of my better trips are in crappy conditions. I told her we would be prepared for it since we knew the Northern was gonna hit and she was in too. So, we loaded up Saturday after work and headed down with what I thought to be a great game plan to battle the conditions and emerge victorious. But, as always, we believe being there is better than being here so if we end up just drinking beer, at least we're at some place nice.

Started fishing Sunday morning and missed my first 2 screaming runs on the 7000. Dang! I felt like I needed a refresher course on how to catch fish. Fish number 3 was a tad easier to handle and I finally had one on the sand. One keeper fish, my trip is complete. Per my wife's instructions, and who am I to argue, it went immediately on the grill.

To keep the rest short and sweet so as not to bore anyone with my play by play reports, I missed 7 more fish on my 7000. All blazing runs. The 3rd of the final 7 toasted my clicker on the 7000 and I'm pretty certain the drag is shot. Smells burned and those fish were tearing off the entire 500yds of line completely locked down after I got to the reel and cranked the drag. Thumbed the spool to break the leader and get my line back. In between, I managed a 40" Red, my wife landed a 36" BU, and I got a 33" wingspan Ray. All successfully released.

I was pretty sure the BIG runs I was missing on the 7000 were Sharks but I couldn't cast the 4/0 far enough to reach where I was catching them. So at a little after 10pm Monday night, I took a little dip to get further out in the channel and cast the 4/0. It was our final night and I wanted to see what was terrorizing me before we had to head home the next morning. Still not where the 7000 was but close enough. And it was freezing so it would have to do. Guess it was close enough cuz at 10:30pm, it went bonkers. The initial 200yds mono was gone before I could get the rod out of the holder and it took me well into the braid, both 60lb. Just like the 7000, the drag didn't seem to phase this fish and it was pulling me around. We battled back and forth after that initial big run for about half an hour and I finally put on the harness and sat down in the sand. Dug the rod butt in the sand, kicked out some foot holds and locked the drag. Holy Christ. For another hour we fought and finally at midnight with the moon shining bright, I got my fish. I wish there was a way to describe the feeling that pics just can't capture, no matter how good your camera. I knew it was a good fish, or my luck, a smaller foul hooked Shark. When I finally got it to cooperate and leave the channel for the shallows near shore, there is no way to put into words that first glimpse of dorsal and tail in the moonlight and just know by the distance, this is a GOOD fish. Eerie and awesome at the same time. I forgot to change the mode to night mode on the camera so the pics aren't great but I'm pretty sure you can still see the size. Well, it was a good fish. For me anyway. Say hello to my new personal best Shark. 7'2" Sandbar. Only my second Shark over 7' and I can't help but think finally, my biggest Shark should be from where I fish the most. She was FAT. Back in the water safe and sound to deliver a next generation of terrorizers. I will note that she was NOT very cooperative w the pics and we will probably not be besties anytime soon. Gave up before I had her out of the water to long after that fight. You can see from the pics that she also wiped out one of my other lines so I was dealing with that also.

And how fitting that while packing up camp, my 7000 that I barely cast out was hit and almost spooled again, just to let me know that even though I had a GREAT trip, they still rule out there.

awesome report. That shark is a tank. That would have sucked if you left the sand without really knowing what was continuously dumping the 7000. Curiosity satisfied!

Thanks everyone. Despite the wind, which hit about 2 hours earlier than they said Sunday morning, we had a blast. We knew it was gonna be windy, so we set up for it Saturday night. Was bad when you got out from behind the truck but worth it for the fish we caught. Trip I'll never forget.
