|
|
So my time in S.A is winding down and before we PCS out, my friend and I are heading down one last time around April 15ish. So I've made my own flat/flyline king rigs and caught them from a boat that way, but have yet to land one from a jetty. Hoping they will have showed up by this time.
I have seen balloon rigs used successfully off the jetty in South Padre. I don't know what knot to use so the balloon releases/pops when the king strikes and what the best 'netable' bait for them is (we used blue runners on the flatline and I hear ribbonfish are great baits). Any suggestions to increase our landlocked chances at a king would be great! Of course, I'll prob spend most my time jigging for pomps while my buddy mans the king rod. Got him hooked on saltwater fishing and would love to see him with a drag smoking king on. Thanks guys and tight lines! |

| I would just go with a slide line instead of messing with a balloon. |

They will be there if the clear water is in. The wind/tide is a big factor in either slide lining or ballooning a bait out. With a north wind or a strong outgoing tide, fish busting just out of range, etc balloons can be the ticket. Just tie the balloon like you would normally when blowing up a balloon but thread the line through while tying the knot at your selected depth. When a fish hits, the water pressure will pop the balloon. I've never had a problem with kings but sometimes tarpon will spit a bait out the moment they feel the pressure from the balloon getting pulled under... Good luck _________________ www.GetOnSeaLevel.com |

| When I run a balloon from the pier I use a rubber banb to attach the balloon to my leader. I keep bags of both I my tackle box. Blue runners, watermello shad and menhaden are a good choice but never turn away from big skip jacks and blue fish. |
