Subject: First and Last Casts

Despite reason and good sense, floated the boat yesterday after work.....very lumpy, wind blowing somewhere in the neighborhood of 30+ sustained with gusts estimates I won’t admit to taking my flat bottom boat into.......after easing it upwind for a while, we throw 3 large drift socks and settle in.....I pick up my pole (already rigged) as Tyler is checking his drag.......I throw out very first cast, twitch it twice, and BLAM! Fish takes off to the side, I can feel the head shake and the weight, it’s a redfish......it starts heading upwind to confirm my suspicions, and I tell Tyler to go ahead and cast, I got it, just a redfish.....until “she” comes up to the boat......trout.....big one......Suddenly everything shift gears as I scream like a maniac for tyler to get the net, it’s a big girl.......

Little background here......recently on another trip, the long handled dip net usually living in the boat was destroyed in a tragic shallow water drift sock rescue, and I admit, haven’t been to the store to replace it....I just threw an old wading short-handled net in the boat in case the coast guard had to see one.......which is the net Tyler picks up to net this big girl.......

Zoom in.......I get her up to the heavily rocking boat, and Tyler takes a swipe at her.....she spans the top of the net by several inches on either side, rolls off the top, and keeps chugging......fish is too big for the net!!!!......after a brief heart attack and a couple more pulls and rod turns, and I get her headed towards Tyler again, and he takes another swipe at her.....again, she spans the net, however, one of the hooks from my lure sticks in the net, as she flops out again!! however, fish is outside the net, connected to it, and thrashing to beat the band.......things get real tough at this point, as its looking like the fish will escape......Tyler suddenly gains the determination of a short dude at a tough man contest......in a flash, he grabs at the fish and hauls the worthless net, entangled with the lure, and the fish overboard......in the melee, he winds up sticking two hooks in his hand, which come to find out was the “device” that actually landed the fish......upon further review it was three hooks in the hand Editor Smile

A couple of high fives, quick photo, and away she goes......whew!!!......then I notice I have blood on my hand....there is blood on the console, and oddly enough, blood on the camera......Tyler is bleeding like a stuck pig.......he had grabbed at the entire mess to ensure that fish got in the boat.....as I was untangling my lure from the net afterwards, I found what I thought was a scale on one of my hooks.....turns out it was a good size chunk of Tylers hand!!!

So, for those of you who wonder, Tyler is the dude you want on your team! Especially when trying to land a 29.5 inch trout with a dip net made for 12 inch rainbow trout!!! Second largest trout I”ve caught so far......

After some first aid in the form of a few sips of liquid pain-killer, we are back in business.......action is OK for the day, and we enjoy a couple of drifts of blow-ups, and miss a couple of nice ones.....on his very last cast, Tyler hooks in to and lands a PERFECT tournament size redfish, 28” inches on the nose, and almost 9 lbs......vindication for the day......

So, Tyler, I’ll head to Academy to get a new dip net for next time.......good fishin’ with you..... you’re the man!!

Cool story!!!

Snookered... don't worry about Tyler's hands!!! They have seen worse!!! Ask him sometime to tell you the story about our Baja Trip and his hands and his wife's attempt to kill him in Mexico............. very funny and painful!!!!!!!!!

Oh BTW --- I just remembered Tyler grabbing a humbolt squid (the killer squid of the Sea of Cortez) without knowing what it was in the dark of the night right out of the water as it was splashing against the beach.
