|
|
Hello everyone. I read somewhere that people use a small amount of diesel fuel poured over corn to attract hogs. Is this a method that is safe to us as far as consuming the meat of the pig. It's used to keep raccoons and other game from eating the feed. Just checking out new baiting ideas because the hogs on my place to too damn smart! _________________ wishin i was fishin! |

yes, people use diesel....personally, i don't like it...
over the years, i have found if you take a 5 gallon bucket, add your corn, then buy the cheapest kook-aid you can find at the dollar store, cherry or strawberry flavored, pour the dry mix in the corn, stir around and either scatter on the ground or in a big pile, pigs love it.
or, you can hit up the feed store and get a sack of Purina Horse and Mule sweet feed, the pigs cannot resist either one.
or, build a pig pipe....basically a long PVC pipe with some holes drilled in it, a swivel, anchor it down and then laugh all the way to the bank...it's hilarious!
last but not least, most effective trap and easy to build, a figure 6 hog trap....you can catch mulitples all in one shot.
good luck. _________________ Trophy whitetail and exotic hunts on some of the finest ranches Texas has to offer, www.mcoutfitterstexas.com

I've had luck filling a 5 gallon bucket about 3/4 full, adding a couple packets of the koolaid like Obsessed does, but I also add a can or two of the cheapest beer, stirring it up, and putting a lid on it and letting it sit out in the sun for about a week. Turns it into a sour mash. I find putting an igloo drain spout onto the lid so that you can vent out the air when it gets to the point its about to blow the lid helps. Also laying it down every couple of days and giving it a tumble for a few minutes so that the liquid gets spread without sitting on the bottom also helps. _________________ Jacob McDonald

Thanks guys. Never heard of the kool aid method. Will try that one next week. Wish I could afford a nice hog trap but for now it's just hunting out of a stand. _________________ wishin i was fishin! |

do you have extra T-posts and cattle panel laying around the ranch? that's how we built ours...
the kool-aid thing works great once they find it....and it's cheap...other than the corn. _________________ Trophy whitetail and exotic hunts on some of the finest ranches Texas has to offer, www.mcoutfitterstexas.com

I do this method with the cheap beer and kool aid and also Jell-O. Let sit in black 5 gallon bucket in the sun until your ready to hunt. We kept our last one months and it surprisingly wasn't horrible like we thought it would be when we popped the lid. Still smelled sweet.
I also like to go up to the local feed store, for me its up the highway at the CO-OP in New Braunfels, and buy some of their feed molasses. Mix that in also for some sweet taste\smell. It's pretty cheap, you just have take your own bucket. I just take em one of those 5 gallon Ozarka water bottles to fill.
Although I still have yet to notice any of these "secret" recipes make any difference on hogs. They eat that stuff the same way they eat just regular ol corn sprinkled on the road. At least on the place I have access to. We got 9 hogs in the trap the other night and all that we baited it with was one small handful of reg deer corn, lol.

Yeah but adding all of the other stuff makes us think like we have a secret angle on attracting them and that makes us feel more confident |

Thats true!!!
All good ideas. I have tried all that are mentioned here and they have all worked. Depending on the terain you are hunting you might also try burying some. Dig a hole with a post hole digger and fill it up half way and then cover with dirt. Sometimes it keeps them around awhile. I also really like the PVC pipes mentioned. Anything that will keep them in the area longer.
With all that said I mostly just use plain ol corn these days. If your trapping them pay close attention to the scent you leave on the trap. That makes a huge difference at times. Rubber boots and a pair of rubber gloves can make the difference. They are a smart critter!!! |

Hey guys. I really do appreciate all this great info. Y'all have me real excited now and can't wait till turkey season next weekend. Have to try these formulas y'all have. Hunt turkey and hogs all weekend and the following Monday. I hunt between rock springs and mountain home. Edwards county. _________________ wishin i was fishin! |

| An automatic feeder and plain corn have always worked for me. Espicially this time of year as many deer hunters have let their's go dry so a well maintained feeder will get steady visitors early and late. If you feed them they will come. |
