In the face of such arguments coming from a business leader and even from the president of the CC Chamber of Commerce itself, it would be especially strange if the CC City Council didn't reconsider Ordinance 026717 for the charter amendment tomorrow. Nonetheless, that may be exactly what happens if there isn't a big turnout from the business community to protest. Those requesting reconsideration of the other ordinance affecting the beaches, 026716, are resigned to being ignored, and thus automatically being granted the right to petition for a referendum against the 7400-foot closure, but I'm still hoping to avoid two petition drives. It's not just the extra loss of time and the inconvenience to which each citizen must then be subjected, but all the times the petitioners will have to explain how many different ways the majority of the City Council is just as unfair to those providing the signatures as it is to businesses. The upside of that endless explanation is that maybe the listeners will vote against the offending council persons, or their spouses, the next time their surnames appear on a ballot.

Wrong move

I applaud the Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce's challenge to the City Council's plan to propose a charter amendment requiring all future beach restrictions on Padre Island to be decided by public vote.

Closing the beach now by council vote for one developer, and then forcing other developers to be at the mercy of the public later, is unfair and bad business.

As a current member of Leadership Corpus Christi Class 34, a program sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce and the Chamber of Commerce Foundation, I have been exposed to business owners and entrepreneurs who are passionate about their businesses and their livelihoods. They are committed to creating a better quality of life in Corpus Christi because our community has allowed them to try, to fail, to succeed and ultimately to build a piece of ownership in the local economy.

Voting to close the beach now amidst controversy, but requiring the public to vote on beach restrictions later, indicates a tone of unfair competition to other businesses wanting to invest and contribute to our local economy. They will remember this beach closure issue, its strange and atypical history, and choose to grow prosperous economic roots elsewhere.

It was also quoted in a famous Guns N Roses rock song known as "Civil War." Very Happy

"What we have got here, is a failure to communicate!"

i should clarify...Churchil DID say something about "failure to communicate" i guess...however, the clip at the beginning of the GNR song is lifted directly from the movie Cool Hand Luke (great movie by the way if you haven't seen it)

Here is an LTTE I just sent to the Caller Times

From Brandi Dean's Caller Times Online article it states

"Members of "It's About Time Corpus Christi" include the Corpus Christi Association of Realtors, the Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce, the Corpus Christi Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, the Padre Island Business Association and the Regional Economic Development Corp., among others."

It is funny how those who don't stand to profit in this are blamed as "againers".

We at BAC are not against development we are just against making the general public having to jump through hoops to gain access to public property that their tax dollars helped to fund.

The City of San Antonio, a shining example Corpus Christi would like to be like's newspaper, The San Antonio Express News Editorial Board, says that our City Council should go back to the drawing board about the Intrawest Development to restrict public access to the Packery South Jetty.

Let's hope the general public sees this for what it is - a land grab by a few to make a few dollars for a select group of the population. If this really was about a pedestrian safe environment those pushing this would only have to go to Mustang Island State Park or the 4.5 miles of pedestrian only beach at the Malaquite Visitor's Center at the Padre Island National Seashore. That facility is underutilized and even on the busiest holiday weekends, if you walked about 200 yards from the entrance you would see it is so empty you could shoot off a shotgun and not hit anybody. Why? Because of ice chest segregation, that is as far as anyone can walk with all of their gear to enjoy a day at the beach. That is what the developer's want - a quasi-private beach. If they didn't then they would stick to the original TIF plan that had 140 parking spaces and a park at the South Jetty that the citizens of Texas and of Corpus Christi could use to access Packery Channel. They would not even accept this proposal even with a "pedestrian friendly" beach on the rest of the 7200 feet of land. Get ready for more beach vehicle restrictions because if this one passes there is no stopping it.

Restricting access by the locals and those not paying to stay in the resort is immoral and no dollar signs in the eyes of a few that stand to profit from it makes it right.

it's part of Strother Martin's famous line from Cool Hand Luke: "What we have here (pause) is failure to communicate."

Expect funded TV commercials from the foot group if it has to go up for public vote, can we get greenpeace to back this? Idea If we did fundraisers for airtime doubt it would be enough.

BJ,

I sent this URL/link to my mother. She was born in 1944 and went to every John Wayne movie she could......And, yes, as you could guess, she knew this quote was from Cool Hand Luke! .....Even though it starred, according to her, Paul Newman!

Don't get me wrong, I love old movies -- much more so than the drugs-sex-crime crap we have today......

The best movies are "old".....better yet, timeless.....If this were another site, I'd love for some recommendations!

(Ok, 30 minute Ted Nugent hunting videos do not qualify, nor does 30 minute Jimmy Houston bass or crappie vids! LOL ....nice try, freaks!) Smile

LOL,

Someone sent me a PM, letting me on to read "The Old Man and the Sea" .....Sorry, already read that book in 10th grade! This is a Hemingway novel....He won some big prizes for this work! ..... Was it ever a movie? ....

I bet Hemmingway had Oz in mind, being hooked up to such a world class record!

Yep, they made a movie of the short story, with Spencer Tracy as The Old Man.

One morning when my corps school bunk mates were serving at the mess line, I ate 18 eggs sunnyside, 4 slices of bacon, and a piece of French toast for breakfast, but wouldn't you know the toast turned my stomach, so I quit far short of Cool Hand's accomplishment. Which reminds me....
