Seems Padre Island does not stand alone as a place for large amounts of trash washing ashore.
Watched a program on PBS the other night, and it seems anywhere were there is sand this problem can and will occur. The same tidal and current conditions that allow sand to build up will also bring in trash.
The Hawaiin Island chain is one of the hardest hit areas in the world. I didn't realize it, but the chain of islands that makes up Hawaii is actually over 1200 miles long.
The beaches in the main islands are only clean because they are cleaned almost daily. In the more remote areas, trash piles up quickly, and wreaks havoc on the wildlife.
The Pacific Oceans swirling current eventually wash trash from all over onto the beaches of these islands. They went to a remote island beach, that is not cleaned at all, and you could not see the sand for all the trash. Most of the sand was coated with a deep layer of plastic debris, old nets and buoys, TVs, you name it.
They roped an area off only 15 by 15 feet square and counted the items. Two TVs, dozens of light bulbs and buoys, 100 lbs of net, 5 lbs of discarded fishing string, 50 lbs of various metal objects and get this 300, yes 300 hundred, disposable lighters. All in that little 15 by 15 foot area.
They said, if left alone, all the Hawaiian beaches would look the same way. Very interesting and very sad. _________________ GOBZA!!!

I reread the post and 15 X 15 feet is a real small area to find 300 disposable lighters without a single beer can or whisky bottle mixed in. I could add several more items, but don't know if there are any shrimpers working that part of the world. _________________ Off Shore Port Mansfield |
