For those of you that haven't been following this, there is a lot of drama unfolding with NMFS and the Gulf of Mexico states regarding snapper seasons....

good synopsis of where we are at this point.....realizing that that more drama is set to unfold before LA goes ahead with their non-compliant season March 24th....

http://www.caller.com/news/2013/feb/13/texas-could-face-an-11-day-snapper-season/?partner=RSS

now, where's that popcorn emoticon?

The future perhaps - all the gulf states have 10 mile state waters and nice long (year round?) seasons, and in return theres a moratorium on snapper in federal waters? If LA goes in this direction behind texas and Crabtree keeps pushing the issue, what state is next?

Ain't no other States left, realistically. MS and AL have such limited State waters due to the short coastlines, and the #'s of snapper off Florida are the whole reason for the shift in days from the western Gulf to the eastern Gulf.

(But don't tell that to the folks on TV producing yet another bad documentary/reality show - Reef Wranglers!!! Rolling Eyes [Weather Channel]).

Ok, I'll add on, but only for the popcorn folks.

It sure seems like coercion and financial persecution to me. The feds rule with an iron fist. Their way or the highway. Bush's police state growing and growing. They will eventually force Texas to abide. The fisherman will NOT win this one. The Government has zero interest in what's best for the people or the fish, but what is best for the ones telling them what to do... Special interest groups? Tree hugger types with bad science? Politicians from states like California, New York... Chicago? Maybe they are just trying to make a point that the States must comply with federal policy or be punished. The feds have done this before. They have a history of cutting funding to states that have laws they don't like. Abortion laws are a good example. By reducing the season, they are essentially hitting our wallets because of lost revenue. Pretty soon they will financially harm Texas until we allow homo's to legally marry each other. They may cut off funding until we change our gun laws. Hell, maybe even labor laws eventually, oh wait... they already have that one covered across the board. I don't know who is behind this bull honky-tonk, but the circumstances are so ridiculous and alarming, there has to be some seriously shady stuff going on behind the scenes. Simply absurd.

Interestingly, the vote for this emergency rule failed 9 to 8. What did they do? Break for lunch and vote again. Then success! Passed! 10 to 7.

Long thread on another forum addressing this issue...

http://2coolfishing.com/ttmbforum/showthread.php?t=472225

Bottom line, we're all screwed. Fisherman are such a small voting block that we have little pull in DC.

Let's go grouper fishing... Twisted Evil

I couldnt agree more. Why do you think I'm so excited about going BTB in my yak and ever since I got it last week on Thursday, I have been working on it. I'm almost finished with it and about ready to test it out. Fish finder comes in today through FedEx. $130 for fish finder with GPS brand new from Academy.

All I know is that I am getting pretty tired of dealing with all the bazillion endangered red snapper every time I want to try and catch a grouper...

HAHA! Last time I dropped a grouper bait...

Whole bonita w/ 2lb of weight. Literally stopped in the water column. There were so many snapper attacking it, they stopped it from falling! I mean it was slowly going down, but nothing like it should have w/ 2lb of weight. You could see them attacking the bait from the boat! It was crazy! Never experienced that before. Needless to say, I did not catch a bucket-mouth.

Aren't these the same federal boneheads currently blowing up snapper habitat, killing tens of thousands of red snapper in the process?
