BTW...just when through all this last year, just trying to get a compliant ramp to a side door of our church.
ADA is detailed, and the liability for doing it wrong, especially if it leads to an injury, could break a private entity.
We live in the Sue City by the Sea. It stinks, but it is true. Heck, I shudder at the OP's pictures thinking it could attract the wrong kind of sharks! _________________ Why is it that these days sales people seem to be as honest as I am knowledgeable? |

Here's a photo for your evaluation.
Looks blocked to me. Maybe you were at a different ramp. I realize that this dredging stuff will be a temporary inconvenience, of course.
Had I not been so concerned about the trash barrels in the walkway, I would not have bothered to include the dredging equipment. But it also does impede accessibility, and that was the point I attempted to get across.

No, I was at that ramp, and it isnt blocked. Ive spent 3/4 of my life living here, im no spring chicken to the island. Your arguement is silly! There is give and take in life sir. You gotta give a little to get a little. There is 2 lanes of ramp space open right next to that, and I dont see a line of trailers lined up waiting. Its winter time and 45deg outside! Not exactly "high boat traffic" time. This is why they dredge in the winter. They did the same thing last year. If your soo upset about all this, call the city and bitch to them. That is a boat dock, not a fishing dock. MOST people know this, and respect the boaters. Have I fished off that dock before? Yeah, at night with no boats around, and if one came to the ramp, I pulled my line in out of courtesy. You own a boat bob. Would you want a bunch of lines wrapped up in your prop and lower unit?? If you have that much free time to take pictures and go to HEB with a tape measure, you have enough time to call the city and talk to them. Bitching about it on a fishing forum aint gonna do you any good. None of us can fix it, so talk to somebody who can!
Holy crap, I agreed with IMS again for the 2nd time in 2 weeks! I think its gonna snow.... |

BobBobber, you haven't exactly been preaching to the choir, but you've been earnest and have spent a lot of your time in a good cause. I suggest you make about a dozen paper copies of your photos for the City Council, the City Manager, and Jessica Savage, the Caller-Times reporter; take them down to City Hall today; and at 12 noon present your case in the three minutes allowed for public comment. _________________ The Trash Heap Has Spoken!

Next thing you know I'll have him out in old Nueces catching monster trout over 30". Well, I probably will not go that far. Have a good day flounder daddy and you also Bob Bobber. Bob, I can see your point also and I can understand your concern. Stay warm out there taking pictures and keep your reports coming. You surely have a different perspective on things than we have down here in the "Deep South." Also, it looks like it may be February before we have 60 degree weather, calm winds for our fishing trip. We are definatly going to see fog for awhile every time the humidity is high and the air temp gets slightly above the water temperature. |

Boat ramp block is fine, it's winter time and fishing is slow so the ramp that's left should suffice.
That wheelchair ramp needs to be fixed though. Chairs should not be rolling through where the trash cans are anyway for fear of heading into the water, pull that middle rail out and put it all the way left and have a nice wide ramp. It's not unthinkable that handicapped kids, war vets, and elderly might want to take a guided fishing trip or fish with their friends and need to be able to get into a freakin' boat. Also the handicapped parking should be right next to the wheelchair ramp so they don't have to wheel across the ramp lanes to get there.
Oh yeah, and there absolutely should be "no fishing" signs. I don't really care if people actually fish but I've been cussed at for pulling the boat up to the damn dock before while people were fishing and I'd like to have a sign to point at if that happens again. _________________ JJ |

Several of you commented about fishing lines and keeping the way clear for boaters.
And I agree.
Anglers should respect the needs of boaters and tend to their lines, so boaters are not inconvenienced.
We never had any boaters complain to us. Plus, we reeled in our lines that were near the ramps when boaters were coming in or going out.
We normally fished the bottom with sinkers heavy enough to prevent our lines from drifting, and we casted at an angle away from the ramps. So our lines would not have been a problem for any boater more than 10 feet or so from the pier.
However, I never saw any boater moor their boat at the ends of the pier on either side, whether anglers were there or not.
Mutual courtesy is due always from boaters and anglers, so all can enjoy their recreation.
Plus, as a boater, I have seen pier anglers without respect for boaters (or others on the pier). We were coming into Marker 37 off the Intracoastal last Friday. Luckily we saw a pier guy's line that went all the way across the entrance to Marker 37. He reeled in after we shouted at him. So, yes, I have seen the problem that several of you posted. |

Stay tuned to this channel.
I received a positive response from the city already about moving the trash barrels.
Details to follow as soon as possible, hopefully today. |

But the biggest problem with this is that marker 37 actually has a fishing pier and the pier itself is not used for docking a boat. I would think the angler has just as much right of way there as the boat coming through. I know i do not pull in my lines when a boat goes by there. I was casted there before the boat came through so you go around me. Now if you are fishing on a boat ramp designed for docking a boat the boat definitely has tight of way. Any time a boat comes that close to a pier you take the chance of hitting lines. Thats not the anglers fault
Actually the pier is blocked off so you cant cast (very easily anyways) across the small channel leading to the boat storage and ramp. So if i was the boater i would ask em to move it too. Intercoastal.... different story _________________ Great captains, the stuff of legend, are made not by what they have caught, but by what they have given back. |
