Rv wed site to cruise through. It has forums for all of the rvs.

Because I have a truck camper, I am reading the truck camper forum.

Have you thought about a truck camper? Not trying to change your mind just asking. More room in one than you think and no additional tags to buy. Princess craft in Pflugerville sells them.

Half of the fun owning an rv is picking one out. So enjoy

IMS,..."Oldguy" said it best, They WILL break. There are several (too many) RV's out there. I have had customers over the last eight years that have bought $15k rv's and never had a problem and I have had customers buy $75k rv and have nothing but problems, and vise versa. 99.99% of RV's are put together at the factory and then "final assembly", as I say is done at the dealership. When you find the right floorplan then you need to find the right manufacturer for you. Another thing to keep in mind is an extended warranty. I have heard countless times, "I have bought them before and never used it", BUY IT. YOU WILL USE IT, I PROMISE. As manufacturers find cheaper ways to build things, the crappier that are built, I'm talking about the A/C's, Refrigerator's, water heaters....stuff like that. A refrigerator cost about $1200-1500, an extended warranty is about $2100=/-. A huge advantage over That Ron Hoover RV & Marine has over than everyone here in the Coastal Bend is Route 66, look it up, www.route66rv.com . If your going to be traveling around the states this will be nice for you.

I re-thought my response, new suggestion:

Rent or borrow an RV before placing large sums of cash or incurring intrest on borrowed money into a toy, that is unless you plan to go fulltime.

Personally I paid cash (I just can't justify paying intrest on something that sits more than it is used).

Some facts of RV'ing are not fun! Trust me!

Ask yourself, how many hotel nights can I get out of the same money without the hassle of cleaning. Wink

We plan on going and going, just plans at this time. I could have a stroke tomorrow, darn i need to go knock on some wood. Bob Bobber had some really good info that he passed to me. I also have an outside source that is also an experienced rv'er. Bob has a top of the line rv. So it was put in front of me this way, do I want a brand new Chevette or a lightly used Mercedes ...something like that. Wow this is like a free college class on 5th wheels. Nice and well appreciated. We have a couple of years to shop. I ain't retarded yet. I mean retired. Very Happy

My ol' lady and I have been fulltime RVers for nearly a year now. And wouldn't trade it for anything. We motorhome. We considered 5ers, but they just didn't work for us. What you will find between units is you have to give up something, like kitchen space to have the livingroom space you need. Or the bedroom is too small but the kitchen is perfect for meals. It's up to you what makes you happy. Join at least three forums and dig in and ask questions. These RV forum folks are anxious to help out newbies, and cover every subject there could be.

My advice is to take at least 18 months like I did and earn a PHd in RV. The more you know before you buy will more than pay off in comfort and adequate space to give you the feng shui you need.

The toughest transition to fulltime is the down scaling. Ya gotta lotta stuff built up in a house over the years and some things are so sentimental it will bring you to tears. But you will do just fine, it seems you are aware of the snake oil sales tactics out there, just trust your research and you will be comfortable in retirement with the right rig.

Before this Carriage, we had a 1987 Avion 34W, silver aluminum like Airstream but roomier with better quality build.

Hey Bob, you know what I always hated about the avions and airstreams????

I always had to cut the corners off my cereal boxes, to make um fit in the cabinets!!!--lol

All this talk about travel and trailering makes me want to watch the old Lucille Ball, Desi Arnez movie, "The big trailer". Not sure the title is correct, but if you have seen the movie you know what I am talking about! Laughing

We lived full time on the road for 5 years in an MCI bus conversion. I talked with many 5th wheel owners.

First check the total payload of the 5th wheel. Usually it is a lot lower than you would expect. If it breaks down under warranty and you are towed in, I guarantee they will weight it. Exceeding the payload would likely void the warranty. Jettison excess if you break down.

Pulling the thing requires some horsepower, but that is only half of that story. You have to be able to stop the thing. I would recommend a diesel puller with Jake Brakes.
