Do some reading on the changes in Marlin quality since they were bought out by Remington (Cerberus/Freedom Group-now for sale). I was looking for an 1895 SBL and I found a new one at a gunshow in Houston. It was a piece of crap. The action was terrible. You could feel the metal grinding inside. I have read that the newer "Marlingtons" are getting better but I think I will keep looking for an original used Marlin.

is there a visible way to determine if one is an original or not?

Probably more deer killed with a .30-30 than any other caliber. Great short range (200 yards or less) round especially with the new Hornady loads. Fast to operate, easy to manuever, dependable, and stood the test of time.

You should look for the "JM" proof on the pre 2007 Marlins. Read this for more info.

Have a Marlin 30-30. It was given to me by my grandfather. Would guess the rifle to be 79+ yrs. old. Lever action, ease the hammer up for safety. Mine still has the original scope. All that and the gun still shoots like a charm. I was almost 60 before I had my first opportunity to hunt with it. Dropped my first, and only, deer in its tracks. Great little gun. Hope my grandfather was proud.
