Hey guys
I am from Corpus an attend the University fo Texas @ Austin. I am currently working on a proposal argument for the current beach cloure/ resort development issue that is pissing off many locals Evil or Very Mad . Through the research of resirt developments in other coastal cities, I am forming my proposal. One question i had was whether sharks would be attracted to the centralized water excitement of bathers that seems inevitable due to the confined nature of a traffic free beach. Could this explain the # of shark attacks inthe Galveston area during early summer months? I appreciate anyones expertise on the issue. Thanks.

The shark attackes their are more likely due to two things. Muddy water - the shark cannot see you, and two, people fishing or swimming right at dusk, a high period of shark hunting activity.

Most of the hark victims that I have heard of on Galveston Island, were people fishing at dusk in the water, one of them was carrying bait in his pocket, another had a stringer of fish attached to his waistband.

If a shark can see you and that you are not a threat or food, then normally they will leave you alone. I have had several sharks of various sizes and species swim right past me standing in clear water. I could see them, they could see me, everything was copesetic. . Even had a few chase bait right between my feet standing on the sandbar. I hate that wet sandpaper feel on your legs. Had one enormous bullshark (8 or 9 feet Long) come-up not 10 feet from me on a sandbar in 10 inches of water chasing bait, moving right towards me. Shocked I ran on water that day! Razz

So, no, I do not think shark attackes will help your argument.

Stick with the legal and moral issues, and your paper will come out fine.

Do a search of posts on this sight, and google "beach closure, padre island" and you will come up with plenty of stuff.
