We are back in Port A for the winter. Miss Dee had a Birthday on the 15th day of this month (yesterday). She has been needing a Pompano fix in the worst way. When we saw that the wind had layed yesterday morning it was on. Even though the cloud cover/fog did not seem to be conductive for a good Pomp day I figured we'd hit some Reds or big Whiteing anyway. But what do I know about the minds of a hungry bunch of Pomps. First stop on PINS was about the Six because our little Jane Russel, Lola, decided it was necessary. So I got poles rigged and made a set to see what was up while Lola and Miss Dee went to walk. Had a good hit and missed it then the weed started fouling lines...;~( so....
We picked up and headed south with hope and a smile and a barking dog. We had passed Nick and a caravan of 4wheelers on a how-to-trip arround the 5 I think. We saw them go by while we stoped then again on the way on down. When we got to the 15 we started looking again for a place but it was hard to tell as the tide was already coming up quick. Knowing that it would be a long bumpy ride going out and that the weed was likely to get worse instead of better I was not going much further down. As we passed the 16.5 I spotted a couple of ancient looking Pelicans setting on a small point and watched them as they took off when we rolled by. They took off, circled and went right back to their spot....
Knowing they knew something I didn't I turned arround and went right back and evicted them. From the beach anyway, they just picked up and went out 50 yards or so and set back down. But they had the spot for sure because when we got set up and started catching it was steady action until 2:00 pm or so when we gave out. There was very little weed and lots of willing Pomp. We boxed 8 nice ones. It would have been a box full if we had caught every bite. I don't know how many we flat missed, several pulled off, I had one jumped off, One straightened hook. They were definatly on a feed and they were torqing !!!!!
We did not catch one Whiteing at all and only a few small Pomp. Needless to say Miss Dee said it was the best B-Day present ever!!!!
I've got to thank the Ranger we talked to when we stoped at the facilities just before the end of the pavement. He stoped to make sure everything was OK and Miss Dee proceded to pick his brain about the beach conditions. I can't remember his last name but first inital was T. He told us to try arround the 15 because the weed had not been as bad there, that the current was pushing it back out right in there. A nd right he was. All the fish we caught were in the first gut and I was having a bad time trying hold up my casts and not lay 'em on out there. Hope this weather holds for a while longer...... See Ya'll on the sand!!!! _________________ "If you don't like the way I'm live'n, just leave this long haired country boy alone" |

That's the place to be right now, or was until the wind got up. I hope it dosen't blow the surf out.
We went back to that same spot yesterday. Beautifull day. And the Pomps were there for their noon time feeding again. Only this time Ol'Stanley had the lucky rod!!! I finaly got to catch all the Pomps for a change. The last one arround 1:30 or so was a bit small and was skinned up on one side with marks from shark teeth. I let him go since he was lucky enough to beat the toothy guy. I guess with the shark cruising the pomps went elswhere because the last fish of the trip was a Whiteing and he was skinned up also. After that you couldn't buy a bite, just as well because my old bad back was done for the day also. _________________ "If you don't like the way I'm live'n, just leave this long haired country boy alone" |
