BBQ Baked Beans

12 oz. bacon diced
3 cups diced onions
Saute bacon, then onions in enough bacon grease.

Then:

Add remaining ingredients:
1 1/4 cups brown sugar Packed
1 T. molasses
2 T prepared mustard
1 14 oz. can crushed tomatoes with juice
1 T. Beef bouillon cubes, I like Knorrs
1/2 T onion Powder
1 T Liquid smoke Hickory, not mesquite
5 Cans Van Camp Pork & Beans with all of the slurp rinsed off

I thoroughly rinse the beans in a strainer, one can at a time, and add them to a disposable pan. After combining all of the ingredients, it simmers for 5 minutes and then gets added to the pan of beans. Stir together then bake uncovered 275 for 2 hours, or until thickened.

This recipe finished in the top 5 at the American Royal BBQ contest 4 years running. The Van Camp beans have an excellent flavor but it essential that all of the vile slurp is rinsed off.

No offense intended, but if you can't stand the "slurp" of the commercial bean variety, why not just go ahead and make your own baked beans for what otherwise, sounds like a great recipe???

Just wondering.

And speaking of baked beans. Everyone knows what the ugly white slab in my can of beans is, right?

"That's the queen bean, and all the other beans are the worker beans"! Laughing Laughing

I was wondering the same thing as CS. Great northern beans are what I have always heard. It seems my mom used to make them from scratch and add molasses and bacon and ketchup or some sort of tomato.

I've tied it several ways and the Van Camps comes out the winner every time. We tweaked the recipe for several years when we were into competition BBQ. I tried Bush's baked beans, they were the worst. We also several variety of beans from scratch(soaked overnight and cooked until done) and they all lost. They were lots of work too. Then we tried a half dozen variety of canned beans and, again the Van Camps were the winner every time. Take a can, wash all of the slurp off and then taste the clean bean, they are excellent. It is the slurp that you can't gag down.

The scratch beans were a lot of work, but we would have made the extra effort to improve the recipe. 4 years in the top 5 of 400+ contestants at the American Royal. They still seem to be well liked.

Oh yes, the dogs enjoy the shrinking white slab, queen bean.

Ok, we need a volunteer. The recipe is company tested, so try it out.
