Back to the mention of Howards. Those are definitely great vintage fishing photos. Norman Howard, Wayne McBee and several others out on Bob Hall. By the way, FYI, Norman doesn't own the BBQ place anymore. ...cC

dissapointing to hear that Mac's (Corpus Christi location, at least) passes as good bbq. went there twice. once on a recommendation, once just to see if the completely dismal meal i had wasn't a fluke. both times, months apart, were the absolute worse meals i've ever had.

What was bad about it? Cold? Seasoned bad? Flavor Bad? It's not my absolute favorite, but it's pretty good. Just curious what you didn't like about it specifically...

Millers is good, and the owners and managers are big on keeping a clean kitchen. The kids can get an ice cream cone after they eat at no charge as well. I recommend the poor boy or a sandwich there. Side order selection is huge and all good. German and regular potato salad are good, cole slaw and beans so /so.

Rudys has good brisket, but the chop beef and sausage are better at Millers. I dont care for the beans or sides in general at Rudys.
Bill Millers BBQ is cooked out of town and heated up. I always hear negative about Bill Millers, but it's not terrible. We get it catered at work sometimes and the BBQ is really not horrible. The sides are pretty good too.

Don't care for Mac's, Howards, the new Joe Cottons or Silverado...tried them all and I would rather just stick with Millers.

It was my experience, that Mac's was just all around bad.
When a bbq joint uses electric "smokers" it's very common that the
Brisket ends up tasting like bland roast beef. As was the case here. I think
Sauce shouldn't be a necessity, but rather an accent to enhance the meat.
Their sauce tasted like a watered down version of a coffee sauce that stuck in
Your craw when paired with the rubbery, unsmoked meat. I believe the sausage to be an inferior mix to begin with and inly suffered a crueler fate when improperly cooked by the Mac's staff. Reminded me of the boiled hotdogs they're fond of in Colorado. If you enjoy bland, cafeteria style cooking, check it out. Two meals here that i walked away from w/out finishing...and i'm a fat kid member of the clean plate club

Amen to that if you're talking about the 3-meat po'boy. My wife and I split that for lunch.

X2. I had the same experience there a time or 2. There is a small place on the island called "TX mesquite BBQ" good brisket sausage is so-so. They have a nacho plate that is awesome though if your not counting calories for that day. lol.

I always like lean brisket or will get chicken if no lean brisket.

Miller's on Airline always has both the marbled and lean cuts. Plus, whenever we ask them to trim off ALL visible fat, they do it . . . courteously. Other places trim however they please and grumble when they have to throw away fat. Other for than health reasons, I do not like the squishy feel of any fat in my mouth.

Millers also does not use too much salt, which is another one of my preferences.

Mac's, Silverado and Rudy's are either fatty or salty or both. Hate the loud music blaring at Rudy's too.

BUT I will always go out of my way to get gas at Rudy's.

The rest of the gas stations water down their gas with alcohol. It's cheaper for gas refineries to dump in alcohol, which is nearly free for them, since it's made mostly from government partly-subsidized corn harvests and distilled from government tax-supported alcohol producers. Lots cheaper for gas stations that way. But they charge us more at the pump regardless.

My older 454 Chevy truck and boat motors like to be fed the pure gas without alcohol.[/b]

With family near Lockhart...I can't eat BBQ any place else. Everything else belongs in a garbage can.

It's been a while since I have been to Mac's. I may have to reevaluate it. Laughing
