Hey Guys hope all is well - its almost the weekend.

Question about rods ... and reels.

How does one know what is the best rod to purchase that will yield the best results?

lets say you have Abu's-5000-6000-medium sized baitcasters or Penn 109's or LW#9's with 30lb braided line and are chunking 2-3 ounce weights plus cut bait ... what would an ideal rod look like? 8-10 eye medium action rated for 15-20lb line?
Do the eyes matter?
Does a not so stiff rod get you more distance when casting?
Whats an ideal length rod for this application?

thanks again in advance as i am trying to optimize my arsenal for a trip next weekend.

What are you using the rod for?

If you're fishing in the surf, I'd forego the older Penns. They're nostalgic, and fine, but the drags are weak, they're difficult to cast (compared to other reels), and are just outdated and old.

If you're fishing the surf, and looking to throw a 3-4 oz. weight, I'd look at a 9-10' rod that's medium fast action, and go from there.

I have a Tica TC2 that fits that bill with a Daiwa Luna 300 on it, and it's spooled with 40 lb braid, and I can zing a 4 oz. sinker and a shrimp fish bite a LONG way. If you want a bit more distance, step up to the Tica TC2 10 footer...I have two of those with Daiwa Saltist 20 on one and a 30 on the other, and they are VERY long casters.

Hope that helps.

Good luck,
Bighead

LOL ok.

Heres my personal opinion. I like longer more stiff when it comes to casting, especially when i am going for distance. For the reels you are talking about go at least 8 foot. I dont like a really whippy rod because it seems it just doesnt have the balls to throw sone of the heavier weight. It also depends on your own casting style. You can lob a bait out there with just about anything if you want to. I also think that where you will be using it most makes a difference. Anywhere in the surf i definitely wanna get a longer rod. If you are on a pier, really depends what you are targeting. I think because your question is lacking detail it is hard to give a specific answer. I go by what feels good to me, and what is best suited for my style.

Dont worry about the 20 bucks, i will add it to your tab Wink

Rebel word of the day:artichoke.used in a sentence. i ought to choke you

Well thanks for sowing the heights of your intelligence sir.. I'd call you stupid but that would be an insult to all the other stupid people.
