On Oct. 6, we fished BHP from 9 PM until the cold front blasted in. High tide was supposed to be starting about 10 PM, so we chose Bob Hall instead of a couple other favorite places that had low tide.
Stingrays were swimming in several large groups for much of the time. Waders with headlamps were in the wade gut for some time. Hopefully none were injured.
One guy near me landed and released a ray that must have been 3' across.
We used Fishbites in the area between the wade and second guts, so we didn't walk to the pier end to investigate. However many departing anglers lugging stuff past us told us not much was going on.
We saw a few rat reds released near us. Two keeper reds and a 15.25" speck were caught. But with 20+ people fishing for them, that's slim results.
Most people were very cordial. Some red fishermen were chopping up whiting for bait. We, however, were fishing for whiting to eat. So I traded a couple smaller ones for larger ones. This was the first time I thought of that, but it won't be the last.
Most people near us knew how to fish, so it was a relaxing evening.
However, there was the guy with a 1 oz. bell sinker who threw his line anywhere and everywhere. For example he was 30' away from my left and often reeled his line in when he had walked 15 feet to my right. I suggested that he needed to get at least a 3 oz. weight to hold on the bottom. He didn't. I offered to give him one. No response. Then after crossing my line a few more times, I recommended that he needed to practice casting in his driveway at home before coming to a crowded pier. After that, he fished directly under the pier beneath him. We had made a peace accord. Yay!
Coming home with fresh fish to eat is always a bonus on BHP. We iced down 30 or so keeper whiting and a really big croaker. We had a relaxing evening with some fish too. |

I went on a pier once, never went back. You gotta be desperate, just hit the miles of open beach. Much easier and less stress. Glad you got some. Whiting can be caught off the sand easy to. _________________ ---Behold the fisherman, he rises early and awakens the whole house. Well, it isn't all bad. We actually met some nice people on piers. For instance, we regularly hear from and see friends we met on the NAS pier. Also met a great guy on pier at Port A, who drove me around to show me many spots to fish in that area.
Whereas, in the boat we wave to each other, but that's about it.
Since I do not have a 4WD vehicle and am not fit enough to dig my way out of the sand, I don't go down the beach. I wish that I could. A Nat't Seashore cop told me last week that a 4WD got mired in sand within sight of the paved roadway, so there are no guarantees even with 4WD.
Most of our quality fishing experiences always were from a boat. In the boat, we are self-contained with all that we need. We don't get bogged down in sand either. There are countless other qualities that boaters enjoy, including the instantaneous ability to move about without packing stuff up.
On a personal level, my wife's health issues dry-docked our boat for some time. However, now that surgeries and healing processes were successful, we'll be getting the boat out again . . . in a few days if the winds subside.
I previously posted on this forum that I'd like to tag along when people are going to fish surf. I offered trips in our flats boat in exchange. There were no takers. But I tried. |

| Hey, Bob, like I mentioned at the fish fry no need for 4wd south of Bob Hall for 8 miles. Drove it today in 2wd with no problemo. Try it sometime. Lot more relaxing than the pier. |

Hey, yes, I remember that you and others said it was OK up to a certain point. Guess I want to go on the sand first with another who knows the routine. That all made sense until I spoke with the Natl Seashore cop who told me about the 4WD that got stuck within sight of the paved road.
When we resune boating again, that'll give enough opportunity to fish. |

| when I first started hitting the beaches around here I had a learning curve with driving on the sand. It mostly consisted of overcoming life experience involving beach driving. Every where else I had been leant to the rule Beach = 4WD with deflated tires. It just seemed like I was flirting with disaster going on the beach in 2wd. But here we are and I went the 20mm on PINS yesterday in 2wd. The driving lately has been great. Do what I did and just test the waters a little in the begining so to speak (so long as it doesn't turn fishing stressful, then it's not worth it) |

Bob: If you want to tag along on a close 2wd trip one day to see how its done I dont have a prob with that. Can make u some leaders ect to....
Prob is I never usually plan a trip. Just kinda go when its time. With the ever changing conditions of the surf you gotta hit (or miss) it when its right. If I do go, it wont be on a weekend usually.
Leave your # or send me a PM.

Thanks Kenny. I'm retired, so I can go whever . . .
My time is taken by Canasta at the senior center, pinochle on Wednesday nights, church, wife, doctor appts, etc. I wasn't this busy when I worked for a living.
But I can always find time to go fishing.
I'm sending a PM. |
