I did go out and buy a pair of reefguard boots the next week. Doesn't help in the surf... I hate wearing them or anything, so I go barefoot still. I do use those boots in the bay, so it's not a total loss. _________________ 1.2.3,4,5. once i caught a fish alive.

Had one slap the back of my hand while holding it up for a pic. It only left an abrasion but the pain was immediate and long lasting. Knocking on wood right now, as I have stepped on many that did not hit me. _________________ "I know that you believe that you understood what you think I said, but I am not sure you realize what you heard is not what I mean." |

I got hit in in July 2003, I was pushed forward by a wave while walking back to the beach and got stuck on the bottom of my heel. The barb broke off near my heel bone, I had surgery that night, and was told to stay out of the water for 2 months. I followed Drs orders, and went back in the water in October. The wound opened up, got infected and then took an additional 3 months to heal completely. It was terrible, and I had to go to physical therapy twice a week for three months. They packed the wound like a gunshot and it healed from the inside out.
I work in the mental health field, and I was using visualization, thought stopping and meditation to keep myself calm and relatively free of pain. I wish I would have screamed bloody murder in the ER waiting room instead. I sat for 6 hours before receiving any pain medication. When the Dr finally arrived, he asked me how I would rate my pain. I asked, "how high does the scale go?" He said "10" and I told him I was clearly at 11. I received a shot of Demerol and voila....no more pain! Lesson learned....the screaming patient gets the meds!
I also saw my sister in law get stuck this summer...also in July. The barb didn't get stuck in her foot, but it also got infected and took quite a while to heal.
I went out a bought a pair of ray guards, wore them once and hated how heavy they were. I sold them in a garage sale. I do wear shoes into the surf now, and I still try to shuffle, but I am sure I will get hit again at some point. The more you are in the water, the more likely you are to get hit.

I was running trot lines with my childhood fishing buddy in the Cayo del Oso in the early 70's and he got hit pretty good. Right through the side of his tennis shoe. He still managed to ride his bike back home. I think we were tougher than today's kids.
A few years later I got nailed on Mustang Island. My cousin, his brothers and I were just playing in the surf. Yea it burns like a son-of-a. Uncle poured a beer on the gash and we went home a couples hours later. I soaked my foot in a hot tub of Epson salted water. That night we went shark fishing at Bob Hall and spent the night. I know we were tougher than today's kids. _________________ Live like you're dying |

| I guess I'm lucky. Very suprised at all the personal hits here. Closest I have come is stepping on a few on the first bar, getting lucky. Once coming off PINS I stopped to chat with a buddy who had his RV up by the 4wd sign. He had just spent half a day getting his 10-12 year old step daughter off the beach, calf wound cleaned at e-room, stiches, pain meds and back to the beach... she was on pain meds and smiling as she was obviously pretty proud of her soon to be scar |

Yakmon, that's how mine was.. went up into my heal about 3/4". Felt like it hit the heel bone. Thankfully it didn't break off, but I did have to hop on mine foot all the way back to the shore. Blood was jus pouring out for about 10 mins. I couldn't walk the rest of the day and painful the next.
I never saw anything in my wound. Over a month later, its still not fully healed. |

| I take my family to the beach at least once a week. My wife was in the wade gut and got hit in the ankle. There were a lot of tiny fish swimming in thick schools and I guess the rays were feeding on them. She was in tons of pain as the barb had pierced her tendon. I wade a lot and get worried about them but I'm terrified for my two boys eight and four who play and swim all day in the wade gut. I'm hope that all their splashing will scare any dangerous critters away. |

| I got a glancing blow on the finger while unhooking one. I figured he owed me. I've been lucky, so far. On two occassions I kicked rays while shuffling out to the first bar. |
