I have Tica TC2 rods, and like them a lot. I also have a Breakaway HDX I like a lot. The Tica's are about 2/3 the cost of the HDX. I have 2 11.5' Ticas and 2 10' Ticas...they are very nice rods. I'm not sure, but I think Roy's has a discount on surf rods until the 30th of the month. They carry the Ticas. Nick at Breakway is great (always has been to me)...and is very helpful. He's more expensive, but you may find it worth it.
As for setting up my reels, I put 300 yards of 40 lb braid on my 30 and top it off with 15 lb mono. I put 250 yards of 40 pound braid on my 20 and top it with 15 pound mono. Some folks like 20, but I find the 15 easier to cast, and it lets me put a little bit more line on it.
You also might need to install the 'brakes' in the spool...not sure of your casting ability, but they will keep the bird's nest to a minimum.
Good luck...you've got the best all around surf casting reels made.

| I use one of my Daiwa's 30 on a Ugly Stick 7' Med action Rod for BTB fishing and off of the sand. Then I have a10' FTU rod with a Daiwa 50. I use 65# Suffex and 40# mono.Leader vary from 200# mono - 400# for Sharks with mustad 16/0 hooks. |

| I use 20lb mono on one of my 20s and 15lb on another with a 50lb topshot. Topshot should be long enough to wrap around the spool 4 or 5 times then long enough to come out the rod tip and hang about 8 ft or so. The 30 I would probably fill with 20lb. as well as I noticed the 30lb gets caught in the air much more decreasing distance and causing more backlashes. |

| I bought the penn previa??? I believe. It's 12' with a 6-10oz lure size. Pretty happy with it. It was like 92 bucks out the door with the sharkathon discount at Roy's. academy doesn't have anything for surf rods so don't waste your one there. |

I have no idea...I just have the ladies/guys at Roy's spool it for me.
As for the brakes, they should be in a small plastic bag in the reel box.
If you undo the 3 screws on the side plate without the handle, you will see a spindle in the middle of the spool...the brakes go right on those spindles. The brakes look like little top hats, and are in two sizes...red and black...I think the black ones are the heaviest ones.

I always start with a few wraps with mono first. I have heard braid will dig into your spool if you dont. So i just always do it |

Actually, the braid will just slip on the spool...that's why some folks put a bit of mono or tape on the spool.

ive used both methods and they both work.
on my shark rods i put a 29-40# piece of mono first (just in case i get spooled it will break easier. on my smaller stuff i have put a wrap of electrical tape but medical tape is what most recomend. _________________ Chris Gonzales |

I'll 2nd the Tica rods, love them. And the HDX for the 30 would be a good fit too. I always give it a few wraps of mono on the spool, then braid, then finish off with mono. _________________ JJ |
