A return trip to BHP was disappointing. We encountered rude people. Some would likely characterize them with a bottom centric word inappropriate for this forum.
One guy had 5 rods spread out. All in the water with all lines drifting with the tide current, which meant another 40 or so feet more of the pier were monopolized. My wife asked him to tighten the slack in his line, so we could fish.
Well, he was discourteous in the extreme, so then I asked him. Same response.
BIG, REALLY BIG guy, so we let it pass and moved 70 feet away from his last drifting line.
Later on, we changed to the other side of the pier. Soon afterward, two guys came near. One set his chair and stuff down no less that 6 feet from me! He was fishing with a bobber on the windward side, so his line immediately went beneath the pier. We were bottom fishing, so I kept my mouth shut.
Combat fishing exists on all piers. BUT when some people have no consideration for anybody, anybody at all, they'd make better bowlers than fishermen. Keep them off the piers. Keep them off the ocean. Wish I could say more.
Also, some suicidal kayak paddlers seem to thrill at paddling well within casting range for the people on the pier. Hey, why couldn't they paddle on ALL the rest of the ocean? Pier people cannot stray; they are fenced in. Why intrude on their space? Surfboarders also do this.
I'm not expecting any solution in response to this post. I just wanted to hear if any others of you have ever found a remedy for these kinds of situations. (A legal non-violent remedy.) |

yea thats pretty hard to deal with. next time cast your line and when he gets tangled just cut his line and hand him his leader. or better yet drop it in the ocean. oooppss. after a couple times he will either move his gear or leave. thats one of the things the regulars out there will do if you keep getting into their lines. as far as the kayak. he was probably headed to the end to go run shark baits. i personnaly dont see it as a problem if he just passes by. but then again i am a shark fisherman to. _________________ Chris Gonzales |

Why not fish from the beach? This time of year you can catch just about any species from the surf as you could from the pier.
Less people, dont have to walk or tote your gear as far. Right now you could load up on whiting and possibly reds with out getting your feet wet!
Just athought! Bob haul is what it is..... _________________ SOUTHERN CUSTOMS

Hey JONNYREB, thanks for reply.
It was low tide, and whenever we tried low tide, fishing sucked.
Is there something I need to know? |

Right you are in part. I did tangle him a few times. That discouraged him enough to tighten the nearest line; however, it didn't eliminate the issue.
As to cutting his line off . . . let me repeat from my first post . . . he was a BIG guy. I've yet to see any fish worth getting punched in the nose. |

Not a whole lot to it, just look for a hole and chunk some shrimp/fishbites into it and load up....if the tides are super low you can just walk up into the 1st gut and drop it in just over the bar.
On sunday i cast live mullet into both the wade and first guts caught 4 reds from 20 to 32".....all fish were caught about 20 yds from shore.
Give it a shot......Very enjoyable, wheather ya catch fish or not....good luck and enjoy! _________________ SOUTHERN CUSTOMS

I once caught the leash of a surfer that was too close to the pier. Jerked him right off his board with 80lb mono and a steel leader. Luckily the hook only caught the leash and not his leg. Dont think pulling a 7/0 hook out his leg would have felt very good. Heck I wasn't even casting very hard to reach him. What is the limit they are supposed to stay away from the pier anyway? 300ft? 500ft? _________________ Where's the March Hare???.. |

| Sounds like you should have video taped it and sent it to animal planet. It would have been made a good lesson the territoriality amongst humans. |

| You know man, im getting kinda tired of seeing you bash this pier. Ive been out fishing the pier very steadily now for about 3-4 weeks, and I cant say a single bad thing about the pier regulars that come out there and are serious big game fishermen. The 'tards that throw over lines, and the people who let their $50 walmart special just drift all over the place are NOT pier regulars and are simply put "googans". I landed my 1st kingfish and a 20+lb jack after 15 minutes of fighting saturday morning. The guys on the end of the pier helped me with the gaff and guided me during the fight. Henry has taught me a ton of stuff as has Albert Z and the rest of the good guys on the end of the pier. People that come out there and have no clue should ask for help in a nice way and not just start throwing lines all over the place. Theres a bunch of slides usually out, and the anchor lines for the slides are suspect to getting broke off if you hook one with your line b/c the mono is under a good amount of tension (hence the big bend in anchor rods). Simply put, dont think the pier regulars are idiots, b/c they simply are not. They are serious fishermen (most have serval $K worth of gear with them and are very helpfull if you act like a adult and not a 'tard. Most of the people that ive seen that are fishing around the halfway mark are not pier regulars. Familys and kids and such that dont really know much about fishing other than chunking dead shrimp on a weight thats too big for their rod. Sorry for the rant, but I got tired of the BHP bashing. |

Fishing on a public pier is like going to a pot luck dinner, you never know what your gonna get. Slide liners, cork poppers, cast netters, bottom baiters, they all have to co-exist or it ain't gonna be pretty. I try to hope for the best, but expect the worst. I've sure caught some nice fish from time to time on the beach piers around here, just takes patience. |
