the newer cummins do have problems with the dpf and egr "choking" out the motor, which is why a lot of people have problems. You cant go wrong with a pre- 07.5 or a newer one with proper emissions deletes. I get over 500 miles on a single tank (unloaded) in my 05 2500 4x4 short bed with intake and exhaust.

i like all the advise everyone has given me. it stll leaves me a bit confused. it seems that the summed up version of everything is get a dodge if it has the 5.9 or an older ford with the 7.3 or 05 ford with the 6.o

being a mechanic, i'm going to throw my 2 pennies in..

get the one you want.

there's no miracle vehicle out there with a halo around it. they all need work. chevys need their water pumps, hubs and a/c controls. fords need their ball joints heater cores and ignition coils, dodges need their a/c condensor fans, heater cores and dashes. dont even get me started on nissans or toyotas.

vehicles are not investments. if you're worried about fixing stuff, get an extended warranty

I love my 03 6.0 ford. Granted I spent the $$ to do the upgrades before they ever gave me problems, (truck already had 120k miles on it), has WAY more power than my 12V Cummins did, and pulls excellent. The mileage isnt the best, but my truck is lifted, bigger tires, and I have not regeared it so that is to be expected..

I traded and perfectly good '04 Ford F250 7.3 for a new 06 King Ranch with 6.0 , worst mistake I ever made . Truck stayed in the shop more than on the road because of the 6.0 .

Traded it in at 96,000 for a F150 gas.

06? buy whatever you can get the best deal on....Cuz they BOTH gonna need repairs. But Id rather buy a good used truck than a new one thats for sure. Can save thousands, even if you gotta spend a little for repairs, not worth what they ask 4 em new. Esp in 4x4 models.

im not set on an 06 i am looking for a good deal first and formost. i want the truck to be newer than what i already have. i think i am pretty set on getting a dodge now after reading the comments and talking with others. it seems to me that fords are selling alot cheeper than dodges. i was told by a salesman that the reason for it is that there were more fords built than dodges in those particular years. whether this is true or not doesnt really matter. im find better prices in san antonio so i may just take a weekend trip up there to check out some used dealerships

well ive been told by many that the gasoline dodges are junk and theat the diesel ones are alot better quality. i really like my dodge but the constant work that i am having to put in to it is crazy. im having to do some sort af major repair every 3-6 months. im alrady on the second motor and 3rd radiator.

I'm not sure diesel are really any better any more. The gasoline engines a running over 200k easily these days without much more than maintenance. They are far better that the gasoline engines of yesteryear. Personally I would just as soon have a gasoline engine as a diesel. I really don't see much advantage to the diesel anymore except for special circumstances such as constant towing, etc. If you are just towing every once in a while I would just as soon have gasoline these days.

haha, the main reason i stick with diesel is because they are addicting! Im kind of a diesel nut. love everything from the sound, to the power, and especially the fuel economy (if you get the right one). As stated above, the newer gas engines are pretty solid all around though.

Have the '08 F-250 diesel.
High pressure pump went out....$3K

Added the DPF delete kit and power programmer with cold air intake. Fell in love with it.

Recently-- Tell tell signs of a leaking head gasket. 4 injectors acting up...Expected repair bill $8K. I think this will be my forever truck.

Great smooth ride for 177k miles on it.

Just whatever you do, if you buy a dodge AUTOMATIC, set a few thousand aside for the new BUILT tranny. You mentioned pulling cows, that is normally a HEAVY load, you will blow the tranny out pretty quick on a dodge auto. Other than that the motor is great, interior is kinda chitty when it comes to lasting especially if you drive it down rougher roads, aka "cc streets" interior starts to fall apart. If you plan on long trips down the beach and your getting an AUTO look into an Auxillary trans cooler it will really help with the slow speeds and getting no air to the tranny on the beach

And if you plan on tuning it look into the Smarty JR it is a great, "safe" tuner for that rig.
