|
|
Hey guys....
I was at the CCAD pier last weekend and was using live shrimp....on a popping cork but I just let it flow with the current.
I wasnt able to catch anything on that rod but I did get some get hits on it...some that took the bait and bent the rod real good...but then it let it go. As soon as I reeled it in....the head or more was missing. I was hooking the shrimp thru the last opening by the tale. I was going to try to hook it thru the head somewhere but I read that it would kill the shrimp if I did.
Does anyone know what is that best way to bait a live shrimp? And is there a way to hook it somewhere near the head without killing it? Just in case I wanted to do just that....
Thanks again....

Try hooking them at the base of the horn with a small treble hook. That is the only way I know to hook them in the head without killing them. _________________ Fish hard. You never know when you'll make you last trip south. |

i hook the live shrimp under their horn. you can see their brain and as long as you dont hit that you are good to go. Next time hold one up to the light or the sun and you will see it, hook them under the line under the horn where there is nothing there.
On a side note when trout are super finicky and they are there and are not biting ill hook by the tip of the tale. They are as lively as can be that way and more times than not you will get a trout to bite even when they arent feeding. Problem is they snatch them off the hook fairly easy so you may lose a few before you snag 1. Normally only do that when freelining |

When you hook them in the tail, you take away alot of their ability to "kick" thus reducing the noise they can create. _________________

| Academy used to sell a hook for live shrimp that was doubled over with a hook on each end. It had a tab that hooked behind the carapace and a ring that slid over the horn I believe. It had a spring that applied tension between the two which kept the hook on. No hooks in the shrimp and worked pretty well after bending the hooks out a bit. Anyone used these? |

Thru the "X" in the side of the head? Interesting...never seen one...I guess I am gonna have to look a little closer...tho my eyes are not what they used to be....
Yea...I tried the last segment of the tail which works great...but the only problem I am having is that they seem to be hitting the head and leaving only half the tail....
I thought I would try something else....so we'll see.
Plan to hit the old rail road tracks Saturday morning....I read that it was a great place to fish for trout....since I don't have my Yak anymore...sold it to move down here...but plan to get one sometime soon. So for now..I am fishing off of piers and shores...for now. I do plan to do some wading as well...hopefully when it cools down a bit. |

I still have one or two of these in my in my tackle storage box but they do not make it into my kayak or wadefishing box. The more experience that I get, the more I shy away from anything that has moving parts, could be considered a specialty rig and priced accordingly, or that I would care if it breaks off. |

| I hook them right through the head between the dark spots. It misses the vitals apparently and they do stay alive for a good while when done correctly. If not oh well perch pick it off really quick lol |
