I was wondering if the mounts taxidermists make from pictures are as good as the mounts made from the actual dead body of the fish? Does anyone have any experience with that? Does it change the price? Take more time?

From what I have heard, they cost about the same ($10 per inch) and take about the same time to make. Some replicas are good (it depends on who you use), but real ones are better. I like replicas becasue you get all your measurments (length, gerth, and weight) and let the fish go. Now if I had a record fish, I'd bring it in for all the verifications and then have it mounted, but that's just me.

There are good and bad things about both.
A skin mount is usually a little cheaper than a replica bc the taxidermist has to put a lot more effort into painting the replica to match your fish.
Fiberglass mounts don't fade and flake like skin mounts.
Some people feel that a replica "is not their fish"

The last time I checked, skin mounts were more expensive than replicas. A lot more work goes into a skin mount than a replica. You have to paint both to make them look real, so both are going to have a lot of time spent painting them. More time is spent skinning, curing and stuffing than pouring into a mold of the fish. I think the going rate for a skin mount is anywhere from $12 an inch to $15 an inch. I personally do not like replicas. I don't care what anyone says, they DON'T look real. Not like a skin mount. I can pick out a replica in a heartbeat. I consider myself quite knowledgable on the subject cause I own an extensive collection of mounts that were caught from places other than Texas. These fish were not cheap to get mounted and there was no way I was going to pay that kind of money for a fake looking mount. My latest mounts are being finished up at John Glenn's. 1 peacock bass, 1 pirahna, 1 snook and 2 bonefish. Can't wait to get them back. If anyone is over there and see's them, give me a report on how they are looking!

Go with the real thing, it may fade a little over the years but I agree with skunked in that fiberglass mounts do not look real to me.

Gotta' agree with the look of a skin mount....but, I have 2 billfish that look good (repros). The 800# blue from Maui almost looks like a skin mount. I don't think anyone will do billfish - you pretty much have to get a replica as you do with many of the larger salt fish. Also, many stripers will "bleed" oil after a couple of years if the mounter was sloppy about degreasing the head.
