Havent felt this kinda pain in quite some time. Me and a buddy went to harrass some of those drum everyone is yappin about last night, and the hardheads come with bottom fishing bait. Got finned by one in the web of my thumb. After about 5 minutes, my hand was going numb, and my forearm was tingly. Had my buddy drive me home and I treated it with peroxide and bleach. Last time I will ever touch a hardhead. Next time they are going on the ground under my boot. My hand was numb and throbbing for about 3hrs. Took some asprin, a swig of nyquil and went to sleep.

When I get finned I'm down on the deck for 20 minutes until the poison filters out. One reason I hate using bait.

That was me. I was sitting on the ground for a good 10-15min, then realized our fishing was over for the night. I give credit to mother nature, she did a good number on them fish!

the silver fish hook dehookers...have the handle and the small teeth at the end to grab the hook and flip it off safely away from you...i catch a TON of them fishing for drum havent been caught in over a year

couple years ago i took a LARGE barb in between my knuckles all the way in....had to wade all the way back to shore longest 100 yard walk ever catfish thrashing around blood pouring....cut the barb off the cat wrapped my hand in a towel and ripped the barb out *painful* ....the way you see blood gush out in movies is spot freaking on ....but was one of the best nights of fishing ive ever had ....

buy those tongs...they will save you a lot of hassle...

so did you get any drum? haha

wish I could say we did catch some, but that was about 15 minutes into our night. There was about 30 people all stacked up down there.

Be careful with the "under the boot" method! I've heard that in times like with the red tide, if a truck runs over one, it will pop the tire! I've stepped on one with a Croc on. Yes, I know how stylish they are! Haha. But it still went all the way through my foot and had to get it removed at the aransas pass hospital!!! One hell of a birthday preasent! Haha. Hope all is well man!

Ouch! That sucks!

I grabed one like a regular catfish once, and its pectoral fin was broken, and each side of the bony part grabbed the thin skin between my thumb and forefinger. Couldn't move one way or the other without it pushing one side in further. When I finally calmed down enough to overcome the pain sensation, I grabbed my wire cutter and cut the pectoral fin off altogether. That one hurt for three days...

Just be glad it wasn't a ray barb. Yeeeesh that was the worst pain I have ever felt.

I have a lifelong fishing buddy of mine for years try to convince me the way to handle hardheads is to slide your hand from the rear to the fins with spread fingers. He probably did it 30x in my presence and it was kinda slick how he did it. One day the inevitable happened and he got nailed. He down played it because he knew I would give him sheet. Next day fishing, got a good bite going and he wades to me and tells me he really is sorry but he needs to get off the water. I of course wanted to know why. He showed me his hand and it was 2x its normal size and was ugly. He had to go to the ER and they kept him on IVs and antibiotics for 1/2 day.

From that day forward he uses my release method....which is to anesthetize them before handling. Have a special club in the boat for that very purpose or heavy pliers while wadeing if administered in correct doses gets the same result. They are one of those species that makes you wonder what God had in mind when he created them. I told my friend on this very subject their reason on earth was to separate people based on intelligence.
