Got home last weekend but had a volleyball camp at West Oso all week. 6 hrs a day of VB left no time to fish. Last night I decided to try to start the boat, figuring 4 1/2 months of sitting idle would result in problems. On 3rd crank it started right up. I guess disconnecting gas line and running engine dry really helped. Spent several hours cleaning and repairing my rods and reels and I was ready for an AM trip.

Lots of people have been calling and asking where the fish are so I was going to go to a number of places and scout.

Got boat all loaded up this AM and started backing out from my dock when...

Can't go very far with the steering wheel sitting in your hands.

My kayak, which I traded my son for, was sitting on the deck so I figured why not. Grabbed 2 poles, my life vest, some water, put a few lures in my shirt pocket and off I went.

Went to my 2 min. HH, which by kayak is a 20 min. HH. Made one drift throwing red/white sand eels and picked up 4 or 5 skippies, 3 trout and a red. With the red, supple bum soon as my lure hit the water I felt a little tap and then nothing. Figured it was grass. Well that grass started peeling line. 25" red. Swallowed my lure really deep. Wasn't planning on keeping any fish and had no stringer (no pliers either). Reached in and rubbed my leader across its crusher plate to break off my lure and released it.

When I got close to the marina I didn't want to go all the way back so I went south to an area between CPL intake and home.

Picked up this almost 23" trout right against the west shorline. It was almost in the foam. She also swallowed it and I couldn't remove it without killing her so she will be dinner tonight.

Felt good having something on the end of the line that would actually strip line and take me for a kayak ride. I caught 78 fish in NM this spring/summer but none could compare to the fight of that average red.

Bummer and the steering wheel, but great report. Always good to get back in the swing of things.
