I was diving on the Texas Clipper off the coast of Port Isabel a couple of weeks ago, and from our dive boat we could see one rig being dismantled. The dive operator said that they had already removed two others. On our way to the dive site, we only saw one rig standing. From first hand experience, I can tell you that structures like oil platforms and sunken ships like the Texas Clipper are the ONLY reef producing structures in the Gulf of Mexico that are close enough for Texas fisherman, divers, and other sportsmen to get to. If we lose them, we lose not only the fish now associated with them, but the thousands, if not millions, of fish and other marine organisms that depend on some kind of structure for survivial in the future. Basically, the Gulf is a wide expanse of desert covered by water. Oil platforms have given the Gulf's floor some texture so that coral and alge can have something to attach to and provide shelter, food, and habitate to all kinds of salt water fish and invertibrates. It is crutial that we preserve them.

Usually our government would go through nonsensical and unreasonable extremes in order to protect a wildlife habitat.

Doing what this administration is doing in our Gulf waters just goes to show how much hatred they have for oil.

It's apples and oranges, and no exercise of common sense at all.

Had to live on the Texas Clipper (Aggie Clipper) after huricain Rita. I am glad they sunk her she sucked as a place to live while working in Lake Charels.....we need more of them old ship sunk out here as reefs and we need our rigs left where they are.

what the hell is wrong with these liberals in control? The SAME people who want to stop development at every turn, on the basis of an environmental assesment that suggest the habitat is condusive to endandered species... the endangered species don't even have to be present, just that it's the habitat that they prefer. Or maybe someone saw a spotted owl fly over a section of forest... so now, the trees can never be cut down. Never mind the fact that trees are a renewable resource.

now, we have people intentionally blowing up some of the most diverse artificial reefs on the planet, and it's a good idea? and even the most hardcore liberal environmentalist is supporting it?

Thank you for contacting me to express your support for converting decommissioned oil drilling platforms to artificial marine habitats I appreciate having the benefit of your views on this matter

The Rigs to Reefs program was established in 1984 through the National Fishing Enhancement Act PL 98623 Since that time this program has significantly enhanced artificial reef potential off the shores of Texas The Department of the Interior requires oil and gas companies with platforms in the Gulf of Mexico to submit a plan for decommissioning wells and platforms that are no longer useful for operations

In September 2010 the Department issued a notice to leaseholders which clarified this requirement for any well that has not been used during the past five years for exploration or production While this guidance known as the Idle Iron policy maintains a companys ability to pursue the Rigs to Reefs program there is concern that stricter timelines may impact a company willingness to participate

As you may know the Rigs to Reefs Habitat Protection Act of 2011 S 1555 was introduced in the Senate on September 14 2011 This legislation would authorize the use of certain offshore oil and gas platforms in the Gulf of Mexico for artificial reefs Further it requires suspension of the decommissioning of a platform if a substantial reef ecosystem is in the vicinity until the Secretary determines that decommissioning would not harm the ecosystem S 1555 was referred to the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources for further consideration Although I am not a member of this Committee I will keep your concerns in mind should this legislation be considered by the full Senate

Almost two years have past since I first posted (Sept 2010) about rig removal. There is no going back. What's gone is gone. It's funny how our Texas congressmen are just beginning to come on board. TPWD rigs to reef program is a joke. How many rigs have been converted to reefs? Of the rigs dismantled what are the percentages of removed and reefed? From the picture posted looks like more dead snapper than a recreational fisherman could wipe out in a season.

Government is similar in many ways to cancer: it lives on it's host(s), which are taxpayers, and like that example it endeavours to grow into every possible part of the body to the point of either being non operable, or the cure winds up being as bad or worse than the disease.
