|
|
Couple of weeks ago the news channels reported some sort of bacteria in the Oso Bay system, so does anyone know if that issue has been resolved? I went wading in there 2 days before they announced that, and it smelled exactly like an outhouse.
I didnt get sick but it must be harmful to fish beacause I did not catch anything when normally I do. |

Kingtender, where did you read people have "fallen victim"? I just finished reading about it on MSN and they still don't know if the bacteria is poisonous to humans. _________________ FishLady

Not good.
On a side note what will probably end up being the winning middle coast trout was caught out of Oso Bay today. 9lb 8oz. will be shown on the leader board next week. Thats a heck of a fish anytime much less in the middle of summer.

goog god!! There are some big freakin trout in there! Im assuming is was caught near the Ocean Dr. bridge since the SPID bridge is a seperation of middle and lower coast if im reading the rules correctly.

I used to fish Oso a lot.
Gave it up years ago after sitting in on some water quality hearings and finding out what is in the water there. _________________ Run the Flats----Ruin the Flats |

| I used to fish there all the time too. Now I fish near the padre development, where they apparently release untreated sewage at levels 14000% over the EPA limit. Soooo, I guess I like the funky water. |

The organism in question is an algae, not a bacteria. Potentially toxic means "has never been shown to produce toxins, but it could". And this species, while not in the published literature, has been shown to occur here, not just in Oso but also within the Laguna Madre. _________________ "Ya'll must eat a lot of fish" |

There are many organisms, bacteria, protozoa, algae, etc. in salt- and freshwater that can be toxic. They are there all of the time. We eat and drink all kinds of "stuff" and come in contact with daily just living life.
The best thing to do when fishing along the coast is clean up and treat all wounds on your body as soon as possible after they happen, and with fish, clean them well and cook them well, or as well as you can. That is about all you can do, other than not eating them at all. Cleanliness is the biggest and best way to prevent problems, and cooking well kills most harmful bacteria and dangerous organisms.
The biggest danger there is Vibrio in my opinion; you just have to be careful, and not being immune compromised is a very large factor. If you are healthy and in good condition, your chances of fighting off most problems is very good. If you are weakened or immune compromised, the chances of your body fighting off infections and insults is far less, so you have to use far more care. _________________ Ray |
