Ran down PINS with my sister Katie, my girlfriend Gabby, her cousin Nathaniel, and his girlfriend Gabby. So yes there were two gabbys and yes it was confusing. Anyways, we hit the sand around seven and were greeted with a crowded beach and the lovely 15mph speed limit. Driving was good even at high tide. We got about thirty miles and I kept thinking the trucks would thin out but it was pretty consistent. About a vehicle every 500 yards or so. So we set up shop around the 33. I got them fishing with live shrimp and the whiting were everywhere and we kept some big ones for bait. We caught a few specks and the occasional hardhead.
I started rigging up shark baits. I brought along a medium sized jack to paddle out whole so I rigged him up too.
Yes I know this life jacket is a little tighter than last year.
I paddled out the whole jack about 400 yards on the avet 50 wide and dumped three whole whiting staggered closer.
We had all the baits out by 1030. I checked baits around noon and one whiting had been demolished so I changed it out with another whiting and 15 minutes later we hooked up.
Twenty minutes later we had a six foot bull on the sand. Nathaniel's first shark.
After a few pics we had a successful release. He took off immediately.
While walking back to the truck I saw the 50 get rocked. I hopped up on the truck but the shark dropped it and never came back. I checked out the bait later and it looked to be about the same size as our earlier shark just barely missing the hook. Around three everybody was crashed out except me.I had three rods out and had rerigged my fourth rod. I caught a big whiting and rigged him up and paddled him out and dumped him just past the third bar. When my yak hit the sand I saw one of the rods was slacked. I jumped on the tower and caught up. When I set the hook it was dead weight. I cranked down harder then felt a jerk. Nathaniel got harnessed up again and it was a stalemate.
I paddled out and grabbed the leader. I lifted it up and saw a huge ray. It came right to the sand after that.
Someone had recently cut it's barb off. We took some pics and turned it loose.
Four foot wing span.
After that I paddled out one more bait and sat up on the tower beat.
We wouldn't turn another click but we couldn't complain. We had a great day getting Nathaniel his first shark and a hell of a ray so we were content heading back to town. I plan on hitting the sand again later in the week once this wind calms back down. Hopefully the shrimpers wont drag all the sharks offshore. Later. |

That must have been awesome. How did you get started( learn what to fish with and how) seems like a lot of gear and money to get started in surf for the bigger fish _________________ Take a kid fishing, best investment for them and our future of fishing. |

Great report and pictures! I forget which month but I think it may be June when you put out a large whiting you get mostly huge rays. I will have to talk to dad to confirm _________________ Like Corpusfishing.com on Facebook! |

How recent did the barb removal look? That looks just like the one I released at about 3 that same afternoon at the 25mm. I cut the skin off and left a gash about 3" long on it.
Congrats on the catches. |
