Hello! I am looking for some advice on camping out on the beach somewhere. I will be taking my wife and two daughters (13 and 1Cool and a German Shepherd. We plan on getting there Thursday and leaving Sunday, unless I get over-ruled by a mini-mob of angry females.

My first thought was to camp out at PINS, not too far down, but that was before the dog was coming with us. Now I will be taking my truck and, unfortunately, a 2WD Durango. I was thinking Mustang would be my best option, but I wanted to know if camping was allowed anywhere on the beach, as long as I have my beach parking sticker. If someone has any input or better ideas, please let me know.

I will also have my kayak with me, so if anyone sees a blue Hobie tandem yak out there, stop by and say hello. Thanks in advance!

Check out Mustang Island State Park. Even on holiday weekends it is less crowded than other stretches of beach (in part because of the modest entrance/camping fee). There are also some Portable toilets spaced along the camping area and a main building with showers and flush toilets. I have camped there many times and it has worked for me and my family.

I know it's going to be busy, but the way our work schedules fell, this was the only time we'd get to go this summer. If it gets too bad, we can pack up and head home. Just have to give it the old college try, first!

I have camped multiple times at Mustang Island State Park. It has been nice each time and if you are Disabled Vet you get in for free and campin was not much. My wife and daughter like the showers and flush toilets. Makes camping less stressful when the ladies can shower off the sand. Good luck,Mike

i think it is 60% or more disabled vets get in free to texas state parks.

i went down pins to yarborough the other day and did it in 2wd drive (even the part of the high road i had to use) except for the entrance to yarborough itself.

it wasn't crowded past the 10mm

hmmm...If I wasn't taking all of the women-folk and the four-legged drool machine I'd probably head that way. My daughters can't be convinced that using a hole for a bathroom is ok. Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

It seems that I seem to have lost a vote that I wasn't present for and we are headed to Mustang. Tight lines, everyone!

Keep your dog put away at night and don't let him run loose. A couple of coyotes could easily trap and kill your German Shepherd.

Sorry about not adding the 60% part for DV.

LOL...no worries. Not much chance of finding another 20% before tomorrow... Good call on the dog, not that he would let us leave him outside of the tent by himself. That's the main reason i have a small Dewalt battery-powered vacuum, to suck up sand from kids and the dog!

For anyone who doesn't know, right before you go to sleep, cover yourself in baby powder. Any sand that was stuck to you will fall right off. Makes the sleeping bag a little less gritty.

(grrr late again. But for future reference...)
2 words: portable toilet. Army surplus usually has them & the bags. It's basically a camp stool (folds flat) with a seat & the equivalent of trashcan liners.

Better late than never, here's a brief rundown for anybody interested...

Arrived at Mustang last Thursday to set up before the girls got there. The beach was crowded, but not near as bad as I expected. Everything was all set up by the time the rest of the family got there. We left the dog at the kennel, as they had a last minute opening and it was both easier and less worrisome to leave him in the A/C.

Almost forgot! I stopped by Roy's on my way out and picked up a couple new rods and reels. Thanks to Nick for helping out a surf fishing newbie and for being super helpful with everything.

Got up Friday and fished in the surf a bit. Pink fishbites are whiting crack. Between the girls and I, we probably reeled in 70 freaking whiting over the weekend. Yum! Crowds picked up a bit, but still not terrible.

Saturday morning the surf was as calm as I've ever seen it, so I packed up the yak and fished a gold jig just past the last set of breakers. Caught my first fish out there, a 24"-ish Spanish Mackerel. (Pic posted at end of post)

Crowds were TERRIBLE on Saturday, but that was to be expected. We packed up Sunday morning, ready for real showers, A/C and comfy furniture. I'm definitely going to have to plan a "MAN" trip with some friends to go down PINS and stay out there for a few days. Hopefully I won't forget the good camera for that trip. Thanks for the tips, everyone!

Better late than never. One piece of advise I do not see mentioned is please do not set up camp or block the low or high road down on PINS. It looks like you set up by the dunes which is great. It is a real PITA when the road is blocked and you are forced to go around camps down south.
