From the Southeast Fishery Bulletin, dated 29 June. Here is some of the justification for the extra snapper fishing days:
Wind speed and wave height data from four buoys stationed throughout the Gulf of Mexico were used as proxies for determining days when fishing did not occur or when effort was reduced. Wave height was the most consistent difference between 2011 and 2012. Days with wave heights greater than 4 feet was used as the proxy to indicate fishing days lost. Weather was not as much of a factor in the western Gulf of Mexico, and this was considered in the calculations as well. Assuming weather in the eastern Gulf of Mexico will improve, and fishing effort returns to expected rates, NOAA Fisheries Service projects the recreational fishing season for the entire Gulf of Mexico can be extended an additional six days.

That is what we call a "typical summer day" here off the Texas coast. |

4 to 6 foot seas get to be a pain. Maybe Fido or one of the other ex headboat deck hands can chime in but I would think the 8hr trips might get cancelled with 4 to 6 foot seas for sure 6 to 8.

As an x-headboat hand from the Scat Cat, I can say that we have been out on overnight trips in 8-10 foot waves.  The only time we stopped on the way out one time was for the Captain to get all the folks off the top deck and into the cabin because people were bouncing around like pin-balls!! We fished (or more rightly, me and a few other folks fished and the rest were sea-sick) around rigs all night, and I can tell you, hooking the +15 level in 8-10 foots seas is tough!
But they are out to make money, and rarely do they cancel trips. But 4 foot is a pathetic benchmark, especially for our waters.  |

The Scat Cat is a lot bigger than the Deep Sea HQ and Dolphin Docks boats but I see how 4 foot seas are a crappy gauge of lost trips.

I know, that's what I was thinking. The bow of my boat usually ends up under the water in 4footers. That is why I stay in the Laguna

I can't help but smile to myself to think about it... Generally speaking, if it's 10' plus they will probably cancel the trip. However, on a private charter for example, if we tell the customer how much it's going to suck and they still want to go... we go. I remember one trip in particular in March of '09. I was a bit hung over, I didn't think we were going fishing the next day. Well we went alright. 10-12' and the customer insisted. I hated life until we started fishing. We caught quite a few tuna that day off a shrimp boat. I hate anything over 4' personally, you just fall right off the top of our swells.
Port Aransas in the summertime, the money is there, the people are there, the boat leaves the dock, but not without your friendly "it's gunna be rough" warning of course...

Yeah four foot maybe five is about all I want because you do fall off of the waves and it is hard to reel, stand up etc. especially up near the bow.

actually 4 feet on the sea buoy is getting pretty "western" ad y'all know the gulf has a much shorter wave period than the east and west coasts, the buoy does a bad job of measuring the 2 foot cross chop that makes wind peaks, maybee I'm getting old but if the buoy says 4 feet + I'm staying inshore even in the 38

if a bouy is reading 4-5 footers, it's going to suck. I don't care if you're in a 65 foot boat, it's still going to be rough.
the bouy data represents something like the top 1/3 of the average value for the swells. IT doesn't always figure in for wind blown chop accurately, and if it's reading 4-5 footers, there will almost certainly be 6 and possibly 7 footers out there. |

If the bouy reads 4', I'm staying home. Fishing should be fun. Using three points of contact to move around the boat all the time is too much like work.  |
