After a Looooooonnnnngggggg week of watching absolutely perfect weather and not being able to fish for various depressing reasons (work and my wife's 18 year old cat died who she had 5 years longer than me!) I finally had the day off, the ability to leave my wife alone but at first glance not the weather. The drive to my launching spot was long.. the water looked dicey and there were storms with thunder to both the north and south. After this last week, none of this was stopping me! (even though the conversation between myself and eric my "go to" fishing buddy revolved around talking ourselves out of it).

I hate "What ifs?"!!!!!! If we didn't go, and the day improved, I would have been miserable for the entire next week.

We had a relatively easy launch despite catching air at the back side of the second bar and twice on the third bar! We started trolling lines about 5 min out and we had hook ups on our fist three passes of my "Honey Hole" Rig that ended up in a nice Jack, a nice king and one break off that went under the rig. We tie off and drop lines that get picked up by small snapper, triggers and an 18" amberjack (lesser maybe? i cant tell the difference).

We troll out to the second rig with no joy and start doing circles, the weather and water cleared up nicely by now (noonish) and we start doing circles around this rig. No joy for the first 3 circles and I am about to stop when we decide one more circle.... we should finish these beers before having to tie new knots and re-rig! Its a good thing we did because on the last leg of the last circle I get my first double hook up EVER on my little boat. We have talked about what we would do in this situation, but now that we are in it we have a new factor (our original plan is to just trade poles since we cant do the over/under round N round dance but that is not an option). One of the fish is a MONSTER and my buddy Eric, despite being told many times, has yet to join the CCA tourney. So as the captain of this little boat, unfortunately, I must force myself to take the rod that is screaming and obviously has a monster on the end of the line!

Here are some pics of the day and my new PR for a king. With the support of my wife, I am trying my dangdest to fish myself to a new boat in the CCA and I felt confident I had a spot on the leader boards with this fish but you all know how big the are after you get them home. He weighed in on the heavy side of 38 maybe breaking 39. I thought "the leader is 52... I'm sure the rest of the pack are in the 40s" So i diced him up for smoking. About an hour or so after I got home, I got online and checked the leader boards only to discover I would have easily had the number 2 fish!!! (the rest of teh pack is at 37lbs!!! FAK ME!!!). Oh well, second place only wins a feeling of disappointment. I would like to have seen my name on the boards though for bragging rights.

Total for the day was 6 kings, 2 jacks, few small snapper and an 18 inch amberjack. Lots released and we were back on the beach by 2:30

I hope yall enjoy some of my pics.

Does this count as BTB or do you have to use a yak?

Mine went 52, so if that big boy was 58 you broke 40 for sure!

Are there any tricks to get fish to put on weight in a cooler?

i was pretty sure it was over 40...good to know Smile

so whats the deal with the CCA tornament, do you have to pay into it in the beginning of the year? can you only pick one species to go after or is it all of them? i have heard people talk about it for mahi, ling, kings, and trout

seems like it would be worth it to get in on it, i definitively could use a boat...any info would be appreciated...

pretty sure most fish loose wight on the way to the scale...i don't think there is really a way around it...

Tourney runs until Sept. 3; you can get in on it at any time. You have to buy a CCA Membership and then pay tourney entry, which I think is $25 and $20 respectively. One entry fee enters you for all species: tagged red, trout, sheepshead, flounder, gafftop, kingfish, mahi and ling. Each species grand prize is a boat/trailer package and the first 5 tagged reds are boat/trailer/truck combo.

Trout are broken down into lower, middle and upper coast. JFK Bridge is the demarcation line between lower and middle divisions. All other species are coastwide.

I know you take a lot of pics with your kid: they also have a kids and teen division. I think the entry for that is even cheaper.

First place for largest fish Cobia, King and Mahi will win you an offshore boat. No one other than you can handle the rod, except for landing the fish, you can have someone handle the leader for gaffing.

There are several categories for inshore particularly trout. I dont do much inshore so im not savvy on that.

Its 45 bucks total to join the CCA and join the tourney, so an avid fisherman SHOULD join. Its like a free lotto ticket you scratch every time you wet a line.

They also give away a boat for the largest Sheeshead and flounder... which my boss fishes for religously.

Here is the leader board (**might make for a good sticky**).

You'd be $45, kids $10 each with free Star entry if you indicate it. BTW you may be getting $20 each back in Academy gift certificates so your be really getting $10 for each kid lol. I know we received our first round of gift certificates last month so I'm not sure if new members would get those plus the one they send out later this summer or not. Prices are below with a link to sign up online if you wish, good luck.

Mike

Standard Membership: $25.00 + $20.00 = $45.00

Associate Membership: $15.00 + $20.00 = $35.00

Youth Membership: $10.00 (STAR entry will be free, but you must declare that the child wishes to be entered & the child must be a member of CCA to fish the STAR Tournament!)
