My family and I got the opportunity to go down to Port A for the weekend! It was more of a family trip than a fishing trip. The first day, we tried to go to fish pass but the water was leaving a small road that all the other vehicles were already covering. We went to beach access road 1 and played in the sand for a while and did a little bit of fishing. The current was very strong but I did manage one whiting. We went down to fish the packery channel. There were a few people catching reds, specks, flounder, mangroves, and snook. I didn't catch anything besides a huge gash in my foot from a hidden oyster bed. There were huge schools of very tiny baitfish (rain minnows?) being destroyed by some nice fish! I did manage on ladyfish but I'm sure that the fish I was seeing weren't all ladyfish. I didn't have anything in the box to "match the hatch" besides a medium Johnson sprite. Nothing wanted to bite it! I also threw soft plastic paddle tails, pin perch and shad that I caught in the net. The next day, I fished the Port Aransas harbor with live shrimp and managed a few mangroves. I also fished the surf between Horace Caldwell with only one huge whiting to show for it. The water was beautiful, waves were pretty small and there was only a little bit of weed. Monday, the last day, I fished the harbor again with live shrimp and caught a few more mangroves. I also caught a few mullet in the net with the smallest one being about 7 inches. I figured I would give it a shot and throw it out. I had a fierce run on it and even tightened the drag a bit to slow it down. I thought I gave it enough time to get it swallowed up but when I went to set the hook, it just came right out. It must have been a pretty big red! Oh well, there's always the one that got away. Here is one of the mangroves from this weekend.

Thanks for the report. Hate the ones that get away without even a peek. _________________

| I wasn't a very happy camper at first but I got over it pretty quickly. I almost hoped it was a dolphin so I could get the thought of loosing a big red or something like that off of my mind haha. |

I'm pretty sure it wasn't but my line was going out on my Abu Garcia faster than I've ever seen it. And I don't even think the hook was in the fishes mouth because when I tried to set it, it just came right out. I hooked the mullet close to the anal fin so I imagine it had its head and nothing else! |

Yep its been sooooo slow for everyone out there in Port A. I was out there all weekend and didnt notice much going on. Saturday the whitting were bitting down at fishpass. I got one 4.5' BT on half whitting casted and heard of another one caught the next day. Such nice water but no fish? Its bound to turn on someday. At least ya felt one good run, the fish probably just never had the hook in its mouth. _________________ -Mando |

The water and lack of fish just didn't add up! I even threw live croaker in the surf with nothing to show! And I wish my patience was more than that of a young child, then I might have landed that fish! |
