I have never used braid line on a spinning reel.

I am gonna try out using 65# braid line on a long rod spinning set-up in the surf. I typically use a heavier mono 50- 60# shock leader when using 15-20# mono line.

Should I still use a heavy mono shock leader with the braid line?
If so, why? abrasion resistance?

I will be throwing 3 oz. to 4 oz. lead plus bait.

yes because braid does not have any stretch, the "shock mono leader" will absorb the pressure when you load the rod during the beginning of the cast...

not to mention it helps with nicks, cuts, abbrasions due to bar rub and stuff.

i use mono as a leader with reels spooled with braid(the only time i don't is when i fish wire for kings)
my reason why..it gives you some stretch(around %17) fluorocarbon(stretches only %2)
wire and fluorocarbon leaders can put allot of strain on the angler when hooked up to large fish on braid(also some unexpected break offs)
i made the mistake of hooking a 150+pound yellowfin tuna on a fluorocarbon leader on 80pound braid...really started to hurt after about 30minutes, and my back was killing me at an hour fight time...mono relieves some of the stress felt...

Also gives you something to grab onto and "leader" the fish without cutting your hand if need be.

I recently put 30lb braid on my 6500 mag-elite and really debated on whether to use shock leader or not... am currently using 50lb mono out of habit and easy on the hands when leadering... I am going to test going straight braid, sure seems like the mono would slow the cast down and may be unnecessary with 30lb main line throwing 2oz???

I use strait braid on all 3 of my spiining reels in the surf. Never had a problem with breakoffs since I made the switch and don't feel like I sacrificed any distance on casts, and I throw anything from 2 to 6 ounces plus bait. I could never tie the damn knot good enough for the shock leader. It would always hang up on the guides and I would lose distance. I do feel that it also depends on the rod, since some are stiffer than others. The less stiffness in the rod, the better throw I get with braid. Braid is tougher on the trigger finger tho.

I have two long rods, one is 12' with a shimano 6500B reel, the other is a 10' Powerstick with a Shimano 4500B. I use 65# powerpro on both with a 24' shock leader on the 12 and about 20 footer on the 10' rod. I tie an improved albrecht knot to join the two lines, you just have to cut your tags very close to keep the line from grabbing the rod eyelets on the cast. Also when you tighten down the A knot - put on leather gloves, wet the strings and really pull hard! I use a 10 plus 10 wrap on the knot. You can you tube some methods for tieing this knot.

The other replies to your question on this is correct, you should absolutely use a shock leader when useing braid on a long rod. When I first started surf fishing, I broke off and lost mee tackle than you can imagine because I didn't use it. Also...make sure you tie that knot correctly!

Thanks for the replies.

I will be using a cannon, so i'm not too worried about the trigger finger.

Stretch of the mono shock leader when loading the rod & abrasion resistance seems to me to be the logical reasons to stick with using the mono shock leader.

I used braid in the surf and re-spooled with mono. The sand of the surf really did a job on my expensive braid!!! Not gonna do that again!!

Is he the one with the triple pomp photo from 12/1 on the PINS reports on this site? Name on report says Curtis Mai.

The rod in that photo is the exact same rod I will be using. 3-piece 13'-2" Team Alabama Rod. The rod is supposedly able to use both conventional baitcaster or spinning reels.

I have been using a Daiwa SHA 30 on the rod. Team Alabama Rods recommends using braid when switching the rod over to a spinning reel.

That is my reason for trying the braid line.
