Bighead

I've been on head boats and fished a few tournaments, but have never gone offshore in a private boat, just me and the guys...had an absolute BLAST!

We caught our limits of snapper quickly dropping butterfly jigs in about 130 feet of water...that was a LOT of fun, especially when the jigs would get just HAMMERED.

We found some trash, and managed to catch two nice cobia that day, then found a weedline and went looking for mahi...no luck, but we caught several bonito, and two keeper Kings...nothing gigantic, but good size for eating.

We got home, cleaned fish, and had the wife prep everything to fry some mackerel balls and snaper, and we ate fish that never saw a freezer...it's not much better than that.

A couple of things...I learned.

1. I want snorkle gear and a spear gun.
2. I want a couple of offshore jigging rigs, and have no idea where to start.

I'm thinking about starting with a pair of 6' and 6'6" Ugly Stick Tiger Lites with Shimano Saragossa 10,000's filled with 60 or 80 pound braid and just going from there...I was reading about hollow core braid and splicing a 'top shot' or leader into it...and was thinking about splicing in some 40 or 50 lb floro carbon in about a 20-30 yard length.

I'm curious as to what you guys might think and/or recommend.

TFTR!
i would get a shimano trevalla jigging rod 50-100pound test
paired with either a tyrnos 12(2speed) or
a fin nor offshore spinner 4500-6500 (ebay has some good deals on both of these reels)
spooled with 50-80pound suffix performance braid will catch just about any fish you encounter i own both of these rodcombos and they have both landed more than a dozen fish over 100pounds

i bought two ugly stick jigging rods and broke both of them with my tyrnos 12 (the second one was rated for 80-200pound line Sad

It's a blast! My next offshore reel is going to be the gosa 10K filled with Momoi's Diamond Braid - 65lb. Offshore Blue. on a Shimano trevela 5'8" with the aluminum gimbal or the Terez spinning rod. Its primary use will be for jigging and popping. Roy's will guide you in the right directions.

I love fishing inshore (esp black drum) but only when I can't go offshore.... Wink

Good value jigging combo for snapper/ajs/grouper is the okuma cedros jigging rod (on sale at Roys recently, not sure if it still is) and a shimano tld or avet conventional (MX/SX). I like the Avets I just got for $140ish each....

I'm sold on metered braid for bottom jigging. We were out saturday in ~270 of water tied to rig. Marked lots of fish at the 200' mark, but not much up top or at the bottom. I have powerpro 65lb metered braid. It has 4 colors, one every 25'. Whatever color you see when you reel it all the way (say blue), just drop until you see that color again and you're at 100', then keep going until you see it the 2nd time and you're at 200'. Stopped there. Didn't take but 2 seconds to get tagged and then crank one up .... Got about 10 vermillion and couple of reds (vermillions have a 20 reef fish limit) in a row, handed the rod to the wife, and took a beer break....

The rest of the crew was dropping to the bottom and nada, although we eventually finished a limit of monster reds off the bottom with some 6-8" mullet we sent down further away from the rig.....

Get a big gun... I recommend a 54inch if you plan to shoot anything over 10lbs. I have hammered them out there on those rigs with my AB Biller. It was around 500 and it has killed well over 1000 pounds of fish. The Riffe's are also very nice. Also get a float line or make one with buoy and line that way if you are freediving and you shoot a 30+ pound fish it doesnt drown you or take your gun... Good Luck! I miss the rigs out there. I have been shooting here in FLorida but the fish on the rigs are just huge!!

Shimano Trevala jigging rod is da bomb! Mine is the 6 foot rated for 90 to 200 braid. I have a fin noor 850 on it.

Whatever you get for a jigging set up, I recommend going lighter than heavier, esp, if you jigging for snapper/grouper/ blackfin tuna, believe me, you want it light after you've jigged for an hour.
Shimano Trevala Rods are one of the best, get one that isn't too stiff as the whip in the rod gives the jig a lotttttt more action.
I would look on ebay for a shimano speedmaster reel 6:1 ratio, or buy a daiwa saltist 30 will work great. B/c of braid now, you can downsize your rod/reel and up the quality.

I have a saltist 20 that's new in the box...i suppose i could put about 300the or so yards of that metered braid on it. My only had concern would be putting a daiwa reel on a shimano rod..it might open up some kind of portal and unleash a world destroying demon...or maybe it would give me superpowers. Is it worth the risk?

I put a saltist on a Trevala for the forum's offshore trip. Didn't do diddly squat in terms of the super natural. Otherwise, it was a nice setup.

been using my fin nor offshore(4500 and 6500) on travallas for years and love them pretty hard to break a travalla, i haven't done it yet and i own 5 of them i got my trevalla spinner in panama(off the plane) and all the eyes were bent strait along the rod Sad

i pushed them back and caught a marlin that same day on it Smile
