|
|
hi everybody, I'm going to be staying on the beach near the packery jetty for the weekend, and i was just kind of curious about what kind of baits/techniques to use and where might be a good place to fish? I'm pretty much fine with catching whatever will pull on the line (besides seaweed and snags ). i fish freshwater mainly, and only fish saltwater once every couple of years or so.
Any help is greatly appreciated!! |

| Fish live or cut mullet on bottom. If you have some larger gear you might try casting any fresh bait out for a shark |

| id stay clear away from the jetty if you are a beginner for the reason of loosing a ton of gear to the rocks. The surf on the bottom would be the best bet if the wavers arent rough the water is fairly green |

On the other hand, you could go for it and go through the learning curve like all of us have. That way you can enjoy the rewards of learning how and catch some very good fish off the jetties for years to come... You'll get the hang of it. If you're going to be staying right next to the Packery jetties, why not fish them. Jetties are a great place for beginners to fish. For beginners to our fishery, it's easier to catch fish off jetties than off the beach, trust me. You may lose gear, but realize, folks down here lose gear all the time. It's very common. _________________ Fish hard. You never know when you'll make you last trip south. |

| i don't mind losing a little gear in order to catch more fish, but i have fished the jetty a couple of times in the past with squid and shrimp on the bottom, and i pretty much just caught hardheads... I'm assuming thats user error, or maybe it was just a bad day? |

That is why I have not "paid" for any fishing gear in MANY, MANY years. At least once a year, I will make a dedicated trip to the jetties with the sole purpose of harvesting gear that is stuck on the rocks. Lures, hardware, poles, cast-nets, weights, you name it.
All free, and much of it is salvageable. Thanks to all who contribute to the cause! |

| Sometimes thats how it goes. Fish the right place right time right bait and still nothing. I almost always use lures or live bait at the jetties |

If I was you I'd freeline shrimp on the jetties or tie on a fish finder rig with a 1/2oz weight and fish the surf with live pinfish, mullet, or shrimp. I'd bet you'll have whiting in no time. Maybe a trout or red off the jetties. Just my $.02. Whiting taste pretty good too. _________________ Do you even fish, Bro? |

| I throw gold spoons or anything shiny this time of year for smacks, reds, jacks, and even kings. I throw alot of speck rigs for trout. Take an assortment and see what works. I bet even freshwater gear would work fine. |
