got to Deep Sea Headquarters, dont think we could have had a better day to go..
beautiful sunrise
getting through the jetties..
there is that sun
ready to fish!
BAIT!
trolling
i saw a small sailfish try and "trip' the lure
dolphins..
few king hookups early on, on boat rods they wernt landed
i started with a green squid skirt and ribbonfish, after a while of playing with what would work i went to a glow skirt, and a naked ribbonfish both worked well..
Rabbit getting a snapper
we had two cobia come to the surface the bigger of the two bumped my ribbonfish then devoured the captains bait..
it fought for over 30minutes, and weighed probably about 60pounds
there she is
what a awesome fish
Rabbit getting on some more fish
pretty sure this was a king
another king got chomped on the way in, we got the shark rod ready and pitched a vermillion at the offending shark when it showed back up..
i set the hook and this shark doesn't do anything(it just thrashed angrily), i was expecting at least one run instead it comes to be leadered and the captain cuts off the hook leaving as little leader as possible
my first king on the deck
got him on the glow squid skirt hooked perfect in the lip on the trailer circle hook
fish box getting pretty full
this was a new one for me...strawberry grouper..the fillets look nice
and after trying to sight cast to about 5 different cobia i manage to hook a legal one drifting ribbonfish deep for kings..
cool deal first cobia for the year for me
all im gunna say is yummy...
So we were moving spots and the captain see's a 100pound wahoo lit up under a floating snapper, i drift a naked/flatlined ribbonfish way back(200yards) on my tyrnos 12 two speed(65pound braid)while the boat was still going..
i put it in a rod holder and went to work putting my big spinner out...
a minute goes by and my little tyrnos starts going unlike any thing i have seen on such a small rod..
the mate beats me to my rod(he was scarred i was gonna get spooled) when i get it i have 300+ yards out i try to get comfortable in the fight to realize it had moved to the other side of the back of the boat..i get there and realize the mate never put the leverdrag reel to strike
i put it to strike and feel the rod do something weird(it was vibrating with energy, with no line coming off the reel but the rod still bent) the fish had cut back to the boat and covered hundreds of yards in mere seconds when i raised the drag...it cut under the boat and anchor line before i had a chance to do much of anything..ended up breaking it off(first fish that really outclassed my tyrnos 12(i know i could have landed it though, just got unlucky) broke 200yards of braid off my rod
its been 8 years since i had a crack a big hoo' hopefully i won't have to wait that long for the next one(sigh)
re rigged the tyrnos12 with a squid skirt and hooked up big time...
though i might have had another shot at a wahoo ended up being a 58INCH KING
stinkin heavy king over 30pounds...
my biggest king in a looong time..
i saw metal on the spool (of the tyrnos12)with that fish since i was missing hundreds of yards of line, almost getting spooled is always neat
water was beautiful
hooked over 10 kings and more runs too
was getting them on a 80pound spro swivel 69pound stainless steel tooth proof and a 5/0 owner j hook in the front and a 6/0 gamagatsu circle in the back(that wire is amazing it caught allot of fish(over 6)..(same wire and circle hook i caught that big bull shark on)
the kings were hitting just 10-20 feet below the surface(it was really cool to watch) i was hooking them and handing them off for others to catch
i saw a big king hit my ribbon so i gave my rod to another angler..
got a little worried i may have handed off a wahoo, after the fight went on for 20minutes..
fin nor spinner does it again...
56inch king...i hooked two kings over 50inches and had a shot at a 100pound hoo'
first fish i gave this little dude was a snapper, second king got off and finally he lands one on my fin nor spinner
i had allot of fun, met some new people and got to enjoy life
i filleted two small dorado, a strawberry grouper, two 37inch kings, a ling, and two red snapper should be a heck of a meal tomorrow
most likely gonna have to add the video tomorrow...sorry(slow computer)
Till Next Time
He who shall not be mentioned Out..
so photobucket is retarded and i'm tired of deleting and destroying my report because of their bullsh*t so here it is sorry for the opicture that do nothing...why is it like that????because photobucket is garbage...
Well He who shall not be mentioned beat me to the report All in all a really nice day, with plenty of action and variety as he mentioned. I took the easy way out and had the ladies at the fish house process my fish.
Like any day it started with a stop for a heart stopper taco at Stripes (chorrizo and egg with beans and bacon ), and coffee. Off to Port A, and a nearly on-time departure. Long chug out to the rocks with some scenery on the way.
Prior to fishing a quick memorial to CCBobber started the day off with purpose in his memory...over the side went his hat. Very nice tribute.
Fishing was steady throughout the day, and I had a blast using my new rods that were built as a tribute to the 343 firefighters lost on 911. Shameless plug for Gary at Buddhahead Custom Rods.
A few random people shots

i hooked and lost the only hoo' at over 100pounds few could understand what a fish like that is capable of(reminded me of fights from big Tarpon, Tuna, and Marlin) they start being able to cover extraordinary distances in mere seconds(i had mine on for less than two minutes but i am sure it ran almost a mile...)
i may go offshore again in a week or so and see if i can get another shot at one...
your camera takes some really good pictures NaplesJohn
i enjoyed deep sea headquarters and their boat and crew, they were very helpful
i plan on fishing deep sea headquarters from now on
this 60 pound hoo' was landed by my wife on 20pound mono on a spinning rod aboard the gulf eagle some years ago...my wife can still say she has caught something i haven't i guess...(caught a baby one once but it was barely bait baby whats known as a wehoo in kona) _________________ http://www.youtube.com/user/Shark456Bait/featured

Great reports guys, thanks! Cripes..................... the water was downright calm compared to the last two trips, figures I guess...................... when I am again able to make it (next year, next year, next year) it will probably be back to "sea sick" conditions again. Looks like the fishing was great for most there, Very cool to say the least! _________________ Dave

The larger ones fight very hard. All snapper are hard pulling fish, but in my experience with the 4 species (Mutton, Red, Mangrove, Vermillion...beeliner) that I've caught, they seem to reach a certain size where critical mass kicks in and they turn into a whole different fish on the end of the line!
It looks from the pics and video like the beeliners were running nice and large like two years ago. Last year they were so small that I never bothered with dead bait because I didn't see the point in it. From what I saw the red snapper seemed to be running larger on average than last year. Those who were there, what do you think on that?
I too appreciated being able to at least see the tossing of Bobber's hat into the gulf........................ gut a little lump in my throat on that one......... _________________ Dave

On the snapper, couple things: yup, nicer average size fish, and even more fun was that these larger models were up high in water column as I kept catching them while trying to catch kings n' lings. Fly-lining a bait was the ticket, had trouble catching kings as the snapper were a "nuisance"---tough problem to have Unlike last year we had better red snapper at the rocks offshore then on the "super secret snapper spot" on the inside, and had most of what we needed before heading inside.
