Today is a very important anniversary in U.S. History for two reasons.

The first and more obvious one is that on June 6, 1944 we participated in D-Day to free Europe from the tyranny that was Hitler's Germany.

The second and in my opinion more important one was on June 6, 1776 the Lee Resolution was submitted to the Continental Congress for discussion. This basically said the colony of Virginia was declaring independence from England and asked the other colonies to come along. They discussed it and then tabled it until they reconvened in early July. During that time Thomas Jefferson, with the help of John Adams and Benjamin Franklin wrote the Declaration of Independence and a nation was born. But it all began, officially 236 years ago today.

Regardless of your political leanings, we are blessed to live in the greatest, most free country in the history of the world. Let us not forget that as we begin to enter the election season this fall.

Can you imagine what was going through the minds of the young men about to embark on the biggest invasion in the history of the world? Fear, excitement...FEAR...anticipation, anxiety...it is difficult for me to imagine it.

That being said...I am so grateful for those that went and did a job that was required and changed the course of history of the world for the better.

I recently acquired an M1 Garand for my 40th birthday...it is a beautiful weapon, and when I hold it, I remember that some young man depended on that very tool to survive and set the world free from tyranny.

My stepdad flew on a liberator in ww2 top turret gunner 26 plus 1 extra missions. Good stories. The crew is all gone now. My uncle was on the invasion of Iwo Jima he was a medic attached with the Marines stories not so good. I'm Vietnam era vet. I was involved in the evacuation of Vietnam. Actually my 2 older brothers both served in Vietnam the real stuff. They don't talk about it much, if at all.

Howdy!

Very important and thanks for posting. Amazing what some people will do for others, too bad more (including me) aren't as selfless.

Bighead: I just got an M1 at Christmas from my brother, an Officer in the Marine Corps. It's a CMP Special with new production stock and barrel. Most other parts are refinished USGI. It's a beautiful gun and a blast to shoot. Gotta love that "ping". Funny thing is he sort of got it as a battle rifle for the end of the world as we know it. Finding cheap, good ammo has been difficult for me but I did get about 200 rounds for about .50 cents apiece at a gun show recently.

I got my Garand from the CMP...Service Select...matching parts, very little wear, new stock. It is a blast to shoot.

As for ammo...the CMP has Greek Surplus M2 at 200 rounds for $98. It's pretty good stuff.

Also check out this site:

http://www.ammogarand.com/3006-m2-fmj-ball-300rds-in-30-can-n3006230030.html

They have all kinds of neat stuff for Garands.

I also want one of these:

I love mine...the ability to shoot THROUGH things is nice.

My late BIL down in Alabama used to refurbish M1's. Last time I was down there my sister still hadn't done anything with them, and there were about 7-10 of them. Next time I'm down I think I'll ask her for one. I don't gun hunt anymore, but who knows; it might be really cool to go out in the woods carrying a rifle that some grunt, squid or soldier had used in combat...................

My dad flew F9 Panthers in Korea doing LOW level bombing and strafing raids. So low in fact, he once told me about an enemy soldier flying right past his wingtip from the bomb blast of the plane in front of him!!!!!!!!!!!! Shocked He also flew Hueys in VN, doing medivac and gunship duties in 1966-1967, where he was also awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.

On a side note................... the pres spent yesterday campaigning and never mentioned D day as far as I know................................. very sad.
