meat tenderizer...it absorbs whatever toxins they have out of the skin...The park rangers did that to me when I was a kid and it took the pain and irritation right away.

That works if you are out of the water. As for treatment options when you're still in the water.......you got me. Some say pee, but I think they just like the idea of peeing on themselves.

Alcohol works great. Don't poor it on the sting or it will trigger the nematocysts and make it worse. Just drink a lot of it. Very Happy

You should use meat tenderizer and don't pee on it or put fresh water on it. If you have tentacles still stuck to you rinse them off with salt water.

I think your kind of crazy, in a cool way, wading at night but
Vinegar will heal the pain outside the water.

Many of the methods that do not work are also some of the best known: rubbing alcohol, ammonia, meat tenderizer and even urine. They lack the acidity to nutralize the nemotodes. Fresh Water is a no no also, it will change the ph of salt water to fresh and the pain will increase.

In the case of Man O War, it will help but, more important issue would be toxic shock syndrome. Difficulty Breathing, Hives, Cramps and such.

Just for info here.... nematodes are worms... nematocysts are stinging cells on jellyfish...

A combination of beer and urine works quite well for jellyfish stings. The key is drinking enough beer to where you are actually willing to urinate on yourself. The problem pretty much takes care of itself after that point is reached.

The little microscopic spears that inject the venom can be pulled from the skin where they have been embedded by dragging pantyhose across the surface of the stung area. Only do that after first hosing it down with vinegar, then drag the pantyhose across while the vinegar is still present, as there could still be some unfired nematocysts that could be triggered by the wiping action. Once upon a time I still had the burning for a day or two after being stung, but was able to stop it almost immediately by doing the panyhose thing. Hemmorhoid topical meds work on the pain, also.

Most painfull sting I had on the water was an ASP! Genius me jumped on my kayak and took off, I hadnt noticed there was an ASP attached to the side where I happen to rest my leg!! So what do I do? Flicked the ASP off with my paddle and went fishing!! Didn't really start to hurt until I got home. dealt with a calf muscle that would not stop spaziming out for a day or two. Oh, and I didnt catch a thing that day either. lol
