Check out The Trash Heap's comments on today's online article:
http://www.caller.com/news/2012/apr/11/about-150-people-turn-out-tuesday-night-on-padre/

I post this because the link was hard as hell to find using the C-T's search engine to look for the topic and its author, even though the article was a front page item in the paper edition. I finally found it online under local news.

i attended the "meeting". it was not a meeting, it was a presentation of conceptual ideas of what it may look like after spending another mil or two of our money on ideas or add -ons by paul s. a pretty pile of worthless info.

I cant belive the people living on the island want spring break traffic all year. I know people living on the bluff dont want that kind of traffic but of course HEB would think that was a great idea. And they might build a big store on the island.

The vast majority of the regular people who actually live here on the Island are not at all happy about the bridge, the proposed development, or Schlitterbahn. We know that the traffic will be a mess. The only people supporting the mess are developers, realtors, and investors...or people who hope property values will go up so they can sell and move off the Island.

It is a vast boondoggle by Schexnailder to get the taxpayers to pay to increase his investment land values. Henry, the owner of Schlitterbahn actually said at one meeting that the bridge was not a requirement for Schlitterbahn to come to the Island. Now, Schexnailder is telling the city council that unless he gets tax incentives for all his extra planned developments and the bridge, he won't let Schlitterbahn build on his land. He is also trying to divert TIF money, intended for Packery Channel amenities, to his development.

Everyone needs to call/write/email the City Council opposing the wast of tax dollars to merely enhance the wallet of one out-of-town developer.

It will have it all and lose everything that makes it a special place. Real shame, a few line their pockets and this beautiful place becomes an amusement park.

The FAQs link in the updates to the article indicate the FHWA is the federal nexus setting off the NEPA process, but the City claims the agency will shrug off its NEPA burden with a categorical exclusion, meaning with no EIS. See The Trash Heap's online response to the updates.
